MFT Internship Hours

I graduated with a BA in psychology. I would like to pursue a career as a private practitioner of clinical psychology. I aim eventually to complete a PsyD (or perhaps a PhD). However, I would like to start out in a MS/MA counseling program that prepares studnets for MFT licensure. I understand that to become licensed at either the PsyD or the MFT level, I must log a substantial numbers of hours as an intern under the supervision of a licensed professional. Here is my question: may I complete the masters degree without seeking MFT licensure (i.e., without doing the internship hours), and progress to a PsyD program and then do the internship hours as part of that program. I understand that the masters for the MFT licensure is generqally considered to be a professional, terminal degree, but doing internship hours at the MA level and at the PsyD level would seem to be redundant. I am in California and wish to practice in this state.
