I just finished his 2009 documentary Collapse, and I must say that his ideas sound reasonable and possible.

I wonder, about any of you who have seen it or know what he’s about, what do you think?

I wonder, about any of you who have seen it or know what he’s about, what do you think?

I watched this movie earlier this week while spending a night in a hotel.

It was very good, and his points are pretty solid.

One underlining point that he never completely mentioned but was certainly implied was the lack of independence on our modern world. I’ve noticed this on my own from my own life experiences. I’ve mentioned many times that my family owns a farm and it plays a major role in my life. We also hunt and fish, but more just as recreation. However, now that I’ve been thrusted into the real world and see the realities of a traditional suburban living, I realize how dependent people our. Few people know how to grow food, few people know how to hunt and fish. It’s something I’ve been thinking of more and more lately - few people could survive without the benefits of modern culture. Without grocery stores and restaurants, most people wouldn’t eat. Without energy to fuel homes, most people wouldn’t know how to survive a winter.

I don’t know how accurate Rupperts claims are, but people still need to get back to basic human principles and develop real skills that are needed to live. Our society has culturally engineered all the instinctual knowledge that we need to survive and prosper without the aids of technological advances. We aren’t taught to grow food, because it can be bought in a store. We aren’t taught to hunt because killing an animal is wrong. We aren’t taught to survive cold winters because he live in heated homes. We aren’t taught to trust our protective instincts because aggression is wrong, ect.

We are a very reliant and dependent society. Some depend on technology, some depend on the government, others depend on luck.

Yes let’s live like primitive hunter-gatherers rather than take advantage of all the technological advances of the past 7000 years.

^ Did you watch the film?

One of the major themes was what would happen if all these technological advances were no longer provided to us. Mainly because of a complete collapse of society due to energy shortages. A major discussion was about how to cultivate your land (if you own any) so you can grow your food.

Nothing primitive about knowing how to grow food, hunt or fish.

I assume you purchase food at a grocery store, no? Where do you think that food comes from? The beginning of the supply chain begins with someone growing the food, hunting the food, raising the food, slaughtering the food, cultivating the soil, fishing the food, or trapping the food.
