Low scores, even with APs and honors

Low test score

Good ECs

GPA improvement is a plus - do you have an extenuating circumstance (e.g. family finances or death) that resulted in weak grades in the beginning of HS? Be sure to talk about it in your essay - it sounds that you had many work commitments outside of school

I would argue that her the OP’s load should be higher to justify a 3.46. Another point I forgot is that the OP’s CR is really low

To the OP:

What is your GPA if you don’t count your freshman year? (If your first year was like a 2.9 and your second/third year avg was a 3.6 then your chances will be better)

ab2013: My freshman year:3.6250 Sophomore:3.7088 Junior:4.0725
I took my first AP class (Statistics) my junior year and my senior year, I am taking AP American History, English, Biology, and Psychology
Will I have a chance? Can you give me any tips?

cynic9456: I’m not good with W. Michigan and HS ran on UW. What is your grade scale out of? 4.3, 4.5, 5, or other?

For tips, they’re pretty standard (considering the fact that I wasn’t in HS with you):

Write good essays. If you had a problem (e.g. close family death or low income) in the beginning of HS, let them know, as well as your teachers. Let others, like friends, read your essays. If that’s not an option, you can exchange essays with other CCers (back then it was still possible)

If your recs are fair, you should find teachers who can tell you that they can write a better or stronger one for you … in particular, a class you excelled or are excelling in or you’re particularly active in it

Minority status might still help. (Asians excluded)

Ummm yeah that’s pretty much it. There isn’t a surefire way to secure admission, just like grad school (for me right now) and other things in life.

Hey ab2013, my grade point scale is out of a 5. Also, isn’t it bad if I talk about my family problems? I thought colleges disliked that and it’s also cliche.

Cynic, Michigan may be too much of a reach. The GPA is one area of concern. Most successful applicants have unweighed GPAs over 3.7. Another area of concern is the SAT. Michigan does not place too much weight on the SAT, but generally speaking, the University expects at least a 600 on the CR and at least a 650 in Mathematics. Combined, your CR+M sections of the SAT are ~ 200 points lower than Michigan’s lower threshold.

This said, you have a chance being an URM and having a steadily improving GPA. But the odds are not good.

Well, family problems (divorce, death) can affect someone emotionally and that can adversely impact performance in school. If it really was a factor, talk about it. I also saw that you held 3 jobs during HS; if you’re low income, then you can talk about that as well, because clearly that diverted some of your focus and time away from your studies.

That said, I would still say try to apply to UMich, but have some other safeties. There are some factors that are to your benefit: URM, improving GPA, but your GPA and scores will hurt, as Alexandre and I said earlier.

Have you tried reaching out to the admissions counselor responsible for your school? (Not sure how much this would help)

Even if you don’t get in, you can always go to another school in MI and try to transfer in as a second year.
