Michigan State University (MSU) Honors Class of 2024?

@bigmacbeth
Sounds like you have been down this path before.
MSU has come out of the gate strong with $15K NR Scholarship, $13K Honors Excellence, $5K Study Abroad and $3300 PA Scholarship. So my question is if there is more on top of this?

I know there is the Alumni Distinguished Scholarship weekend (which we plan to attend). But there are only a handful of the Full Ride and University Distinguished Scholarships out there, so the odds are against you. What is a reasonable expectation for additional money coming out of that weekend? Or are there departmental scholarships also (ie. For engineering).

Thanks

@gohawks1 MSU has changed amounts and thresholds with the scholarships-based-on-stats that you mentioned above. I’m not super familiar with where they are now, but what your child has been awarded so far is pretty much it, and you shouldn’t expect anything more. My older D did get contacted by the HC dean after she committed, and was awarded a non-renewing $1000 scholarship…I forget what it was for.

As for ADS there are 15 full rides and I believe 80 additional smaller amounts of varying size (up to $10K or so, maybe). A great experience. The UDS is not a competitive award (as I recall. I know someone offered it), and I think it goes to URMs. Any other departmental awards are not offered through the HC, and I am not sure how or if they are awarded.

I believe there is a page on the MSU site that does list other scholarships that are available for new students. That’s a pretty fantastic deal your student has in front of them. MSU has been a great school for my D. I’d give it serious consideration.

@bigmacbeth Giving it definite consideration. Kind of came out of nowhere, but now in the top 3-5 schools. I guess we’ll see how the visits and ADS weekend goes and compile all the data after that. Thanks for taking the time to answer.

What kind of scholarship can we expect based on the following scores now that D20 has been admitted to Honors college? Haven’t received the mail yet, hence wondering. Thanks.

Applied - 10/26/19
Accepted - 11/6/19
Accepted to Honors college - 11/22/19
SAT - 1490
ACT - 32
GPA - 3.9 W/4.22 UW
Hardly any APs; In IB program; some ECs
Instate
Applied to - Arts & Sciences

Congrats @RaLaSrSa $15K for stats, $5K Honors, and probably a one-time $5K for study abroad. Check my math, I may have forgotten something. It’s all on their website: https://admissions.msu.edu/cost-aid/merit-based-aid/default.aspx

$15K for stats? Isn’t that for non-residents (OOS)? We are InState. If so, just $5K for Honors and probably a one-time $5K for study abroad?

@bigmacbeth So we received the Honors College invitation letter today. There was no mention of any scholarship (I was hoping to see at the very least the $5K spelled out there) in there. If it’s not spelt out in the invitation letter, does that mean we are not getting anything? Or would the actual $ figure come out later separately? Confused. Thanks!

@RaLaSrSa Sorry, the numbers I quoted were for OOS, I’m not sure what they offer in-state. D20’s HC scholarship was mentioned in her letter. Again, not sure what they do for in-state students, but maybe someone else here can give you some input. Hope they come through for you!

@bigmacbeth You don’t have to be sorry! Anyway, I think DD missed the $5K Honors Instate scholarship by a whisker as her ACT was 32 (needed 33 or more) and SAT was 1490 (needed 1500 or more). Not sure if there’s anything we could do at this point but this is heart breaking. So close yet so far.

DD accepted this week, letter came in the mail yesterday with flag Stats are similar to those above. OOS, ACT 33,(35 superscored), GPA 4.o unweighted, 9 AP’s, lots of EC’s etc. varsity swim captain. No mention of honors college. She tried the trick above with pin number and 2020 as password, no luck. Maybe she won’t get in?

My student was accepted the first week of Oct. The acceptance letter was wrapped in a flag also. They have not received a letter from the honors college and have not received any type of honors update on their portal. Does the flag mean something??? They thought that everyone received a flag.

My son also accepted towards end of Oct and received the letter in a flag (I believe everyone gets that). Received nice $70K Spartan grant and $5K study abroad schol. Still waiting on the Honors College! I have checked the “Login to Honors College Reply Form” too. Was anyone successful in seeing the Honors College admission on the “Login to Honors College Reply Form” (https://ntweb11.ais.msu.edu/HCResponses/hc_invitation.html)?

yes…this has worked for us and we have not received a letter yet

International Student from India here. Got invited to the Honors college in early December.

Stats:

SAT: 1530 (800 Math, 730 English)
GPA: 93/100
Rank: Not reported by my school
Strong essays
Major: Mechanical Engineering
An extensive list of extracurriculars, with scientific research pursued at the Indian Institute of Technology, my own patent, and much more stuff like debates, Model UNs, student council, NASA Ames Space Settlement Design Competition, etc.
Pete Conrad Scholar
Intel ISEF finalist from India, represented the country.
World Scholar’s Cup Champion, went to the final round at Yale as well
EXTREMELY strong recommendations

Also received the $13k/year Honors scholarship, in addition to the $25k/year international tuition grant. Looking forward to being a Spartan.

Forgot to include study abroad($5k/year and professorial assistant ship $3300/year)

My son received an Honors College invite last week with scholarship ($13k), apparently on top of the Non Resident Scholarship ($15k) and Study Abroad ($5k) already offered? We plan to attend the Alumni Distinguished Scholarship thing, but mostly just to visit the campus and get more info. Not really expecting more money based on that test. For reference, my son had a 1510 SAT (one sitting, 790 M, 720 R) and 4.7 W-GPA (3.5 UW). Accepted on 11/18 to Lyman Briggs (Chemistry is his intended area of study).

This link works for me now as well. It does show my son’s info but he has not yet received ANY communication from them on the Honors College admission. This is you know very weird, I mean if his account has been activated for Honors College, what does it take to send an email confirmation with the financial benefit? I don’t get it… just don’t. (Sorry I had get it off my chest)

@LvMy2Byz – My son received all of his Honors communications – 4 letters total (invite to Honors College, invite to ADS Competition, handwritten invite to visit Lyman Briggs, informational letter re: Lyman Briggs) – by snail mail. And all on or around the same day. Nothing via email. So possibly your letters are “in the mail” as they say. Now why they go old school with the communication, I have no idea.

Hi everyone, I am researching things because I’m concerned about paying for my daughters education. I think she needs the requirements that she can successfully achieve this. Do you have to apply separately or does it automatically come with an invitation once you apply just to MSU? My husband is a graduate of Michigan State, and we would love for her to go there, she is very adamant about doing so much of this on her own, but I wanted to find out more about this. If anyone can share I would be ever so grateful.

Thanks @aewlmom for the details! I will be on the lookout in the snail mail.
