Michigan Tech or Michigan State for EE

Within my state (Michigan) both MTU and MSU are considered to be about equally ranked in terms of engineering, but I’m not sure which would give me a better chance of getting a job (or getting into a grad school) that is not located in the midwest. Also, I’m not entirely sure which school has a better undergrad EE program, so if anyone can offer any insights in that respect it would be greatly appreciated.

I doubt either are great for getting you a job outside of the Midwest on their own merits. Surely you could get a job out of the Midwest but you’d probably have to find that job yourself.

Employability-wise, they’re probably equal. If you can deal with living in the UP and are pretty sure you want to do engineering I would recommend Michigan Tech, as its engineering school is the focus, whereas it’s an after thought at MSU, and I bet your chances for getting involved in research (presuming you want to) are probably better at Michigan Tech than MSU.

For what it’s worth, I would say that Michigan Tech is more respected for engineering in Michigan than MSU is.

I don’t know where Qwertykey is coming from…MSU is ranked like 30 spots above Michigan Tech for engineering…

I would recommend you check out their Engineering Career Services websites to see which companies come to the engineering career fairs (there will probably be a good number of national/big name companies). Also see who has the higher job placement rate. Also look at NSF research expenditures for engineering (there’s a list on CC if you search it or just google)…

I’m guessing par the rankings MSU will come out on top…

Would going to either school better my chances of getting into a decent grad school?

^^Which ranking is that? Any ranking which says that probably has a methodology that gives MSU an advantage because of it’s strength in areas outside of engineering.

As for the respect, this is just in talking to people. Most people (who I’ve talked to) who want to do engineering in the state never think of MSU, they think of Michigan Tech (if they don’t get into Michigan).

As for grad school, I doubt there’s a significant difference. If one has a slight advantage (and one may) I don’t know which one.

QwertyKey, I’m refering to US News Undergrad for Engineering

MSU #43
Michigan Tech #70

nikolatesla, if you want to consider a schools credibility in grad school/academia, I would look into US News grad schools engineering rankings, also check what school’s the ‘assistant’ professors are from, and the NSF research expenditures for engineering in particular…again I suspect MSU will come out on top but that is for you to look into
