I duno, I think Michigan is taking it :/

I’d hate to finish second in that race.

kk,
John F. Kennedy said that first … “as a graduate of the Michigan of the East, Harvard University.”

Many people claim that their school is the “Harvard of the …” … or that Harvard is the … of the East/North. It’s just as ridiculous when random people say it as it was when he did- maybe even more so now, especially when talking about Michigan .

KK, you are the one who claims that Michigan is equal to Harvard. Nobody else has made such an absurd claim…well, JFK did in reverse, but he was President!

And do you really think Michigan’s position has weakened since the 1960s?

No. I think Harvard’s has strengthened- at a rate that few, if any, other schools have.

“Nobody else has made such an absurd claim.”

-Maybe not in as many words… but you do love to downplay the differences schools have, especially when Michigan is involved.

Fair enough, but I don’t recall anyone seriously comparing Michigan to Harvard. I don’t understand your point.

To be fair, if you look up Alexandre’s old posts, you will see that he puts HYPMS as the top tier … but he considers the next 25 to 30 schools to be peers academically.

I don’t recall anyone comparing Michigan to Harvard … but I am not conceding to the University of Mars … yet.

To correct GoBlue81, I always list the Big 5 (H,M,P,S and Y) at the very top and I generally consider the second group to contain roughly 20-25 universities and LACs. The third group has roughly 30 or so universities and LACs. There is never a significant drop from group to group. But I would never suggest that Michigan, or any other non “Big 5” university is on par with Harvard. Harvard is Harvard and I always make that clear. When students on this forum come to the Michigan forum or PM me and put to me the Michigan vs MIT scenario, I always recommend MIT, unless there are financial implacations that are hard to ignore (full ride at Michigan vs full tuition at MIT).

Thanks guys; I’ve made my choice. It’s Michigan all the way!

I know Trinity in Texas has embraced this phraseology (or used to)…not sure how many other colleges do it. It is pretty snicker-worthy when you hear it, isn’t it?

There’s a t-shirt here on Michigan that pokes fun of that saying. Or at least I hope it’s poking fun (when I see it on anyone, I assume they are wearing it ironically). It reads: "HARVARD: The Michigan of the East. " Heh.

A friend at MIT once gave me a shirt that read “Harvard…'cause not everybody can get into MIT!” LOL!!!

only problem is that harvard couldnt give two craps about their undergrads

id take michigan, btw
