Microbiology or Genetics and Development

I’m really interested in genetics and DNA, all that kind of stuff, but viruses and bacteria as well. I’d really like to study genetics in viruses and bacteria, so which one should I choose, Microbio, or Genetics and Development?

I could do Micro and spend most of my time focused on classes oriented towards genetics and stuff, or G&D and time in class focused on viruses and bacteria. Which one is better as a pre-med, as I am equally interested in both.

The labels don’t mean much. Find out which department/major will give you the opportunity to take the better courses and to work in the better labs.

Speaking very generally, genetics and development will give you a better foundation that you can then take to viruses/bacteria if they continue to interest you. But the most important thing is what I said first- find out which dept is the stronger one and go with that one.

You’re talking about classes right?

Genetics is usually taken before microbiology. In most cases you can’t register for microbiology unless you’ve taken cell bio or biochemistry…so I’d check and see about prereq’s beforehand.

I took it to mean which subject to major in (since the title of this subforum is “other majors”).
