Microsoft pays small business owner $10K for unwanted Windows 10 upgrade

She has all my admiration. I hope many more follow. We went through gyrations trying to make sure our windows machine did not upgrade. It was like an obstacle course.

Good for her.

Mine updated after I’d delayed and delayed and failed to delay one more time. Now I’ve lost the DVD reader and other things are acting up. Not happy with Microsoft, HP and the world in general.

I just had this experience 2 nights ago. After regularly closing the “schedule upgrade” box for months and months I looked at the screen and saw “Upgrade in Progress”. (Actually, I took a screenprint. It read, “Configuring update for Windows 10, 17% complete, Do not turn off your computer” ) I don’t think I ever clicked on anything scheduling or permitting the upgrade, but once in progress I didn’t think it was a good idea to shut the computer off to stop it. So, I got upgraded to W 10. Seems ok. The browser I never use is now called “Edge” instead of “Explorer”. So will MSFT pay me $10k for violating my computer without my permission?

Cool. Wait. $10K is a pretty generous limit for small claims court. Life must be very expensive in CA.

NJRes, if you can prove that kind of damages. The woman in the article lost some business as her computer became unusable after a botched update.

My roofers have a problem because some specialized software they need to use doesn’t run under Windows 10. Caused them some grief.

I have specialized software that I am 100% positive will NOT run on W10. Sigh.

My son lost all of his game apps and full use of his computer for three days because of this very same upgrade. The darned thing would not move beyond the same 17% upgrade notification as NJres spoke of. I wanted to throw the computer out of the window.

You scared me. Small claims court in our state is only 3K so I decided to uninstall Windows 10 installer.
I followed instructions in this link. It does require some computer proficiency.
