So, my criteria are:

mid sized university (in terms of student body)

cog sci major (or a track like this within the psych major)

urban/suburban setting

diverse social scene (I’m not too into frats and stuff, but I don’t mind places like Duke which are fratty but where you aren’t pressurized into going Greek or drinking and stuff)

I’m looking at places like Brown, Duke and Yale…

Johns Hopkins

4,500 student body population, top ranked in Cognitive science (#4) and neuroscience (#3) if are you interested in the biology side of things. Urban Baltimore.

The frat scene is nice, you won’t be pressured into joining a frat if you do not want to obviously. Ppl are generally really cool about it.

WUSTL would also be a good place to look into.

My parents are paranoid that I’ll get mugged if I go to JHU :S. I know, I know, it’s a misconception. But I’m international so I do have parents who worry a lot :(. Any suggestions on how to show them that they’re wrong?

Oops forgot to mention that I am already looking at WUSTL, thanks though :)

Johns Hopkins campus was rated #1 safest campus in America?

http://www.rd.com/images/content/2008/0802/College-Safety-Survey-Results.pdf

University has invested over $6-7 million dollars in beefing up security, installing 32 state of the art security cameras, first university in the nation to install gun shot detectors within a 1km radius, installed 98 blue light monitoring posts, tripled the full time police officer on duty as well as patrol vehicles, bicycle patrol, officers on segways, and etc…

WUSTL and Brown are terrific choices for Cog sci btw.

Dude, that’s pretty sweet. I’ll show them. Thanks!

Carnegie Mellon fits the criteria: mid-sized, urban/suburban setting, strong in cognitive psychology (ranked #2 according to USN&WR) . It doesn’t have a very diverse social scene though.

^ That’s the issue. I’ve heard not-too-flattering things

Johns Hopkins and WUSTL definitely fit what you are looking for. Also, Case Western Reserve University (in Cleveland, Ohio).

Boston University (Department of Cognitive & Neural Systems)
Rice (though I’m not sure about the social scene)
MIT (yes, it has a diverse social scene, I assure you)
UCSD (might be too big for you, but otherwise fits your criteria)
