Mid-Year report submitted to schools that don’t require it

My counselor submitted my midyear report to a couple schools that don’t require it like UMich and UW. I am trying to see if theres a way for it not to be considered short of emailing the school and saying no to consider it. At this point it is in commonapp but the school has yet to download it. While I do understand that they will eventually get the end of year report it hurts my application overall slightly. Any advice would be appreciated

I think you are fretting over a non-issue. Schools that don’t require it likely won’t even look at it. But calling attention to the fact that you DON’T want them looking at it….???

I have thought about this situation somewhat extensively. In an ideal world, a high school would send to schools only after a family approes the send. The problem, however, is whether a college would question why they received grades from one student applying and not another - and would that level of “tailoring” actually hurt the high school/college relationship.

Addressing your question directly, drawing attention to the matter at hand would be every bit as bad as them seeing what was sent. I am sorry to say, but you need to leave things alone IMO.

So this is the deal. In most application platforms, a counselor can’t choose which HSs to send the midyear report to. The counselor uploads the midyear report into the platform and whatever school wants to pull it down, it’s there for them to do that.

There is an intense thread on one of the facebook groups I am in that includes HS counselors. Uploading the transcript for potentially all schools to see can cause angst for students/their parents when they don’t want schools that don’t require midyear reports to see said midyear reports. Some counselors report that some students and/or parents are very upset. And I get it, admissions is stressful. But the counselor doesn’t have the option to only send the midyear report to certain schools, so tread lightly when you talk with them.

Bottom line, you can’t stop a school that you applied to from downloading the midyear report. If they really don’t want it, they won’t download it. I probably wouldn’t call attention to it unless there are any C’s or below…then I might encourage you to reach out to your schools. But it’s up to you how to handle this and I would definitely encourage you to talk this over with your HS counselor before you do anything. Good luck.

At my son’s school (which was the top school in Illinois at the time) they send all grades and midterms grades to all college. Period. It really puts the kids on notice and it’s never been a problem. I wouldn’t worry about it. It’s out of your control. If you’re out of state those two schools can be reaches regardless. Enjoy your senior year. You’re allowed to have some fun.
