So I had a pretty good run from 9th to 11th. I took all ap and pre-ap classes and had only a few high B’s and one 79 in ap physics. Senior year went really well until I got into a car accident that complicated things. Long story short, I ended up with a 79 in ap calculus bc.

Although I didn’t match with Yale with QuestBridge, I am very confident about the rest of my application. I think my essays were really strong and I did a good job of presenting myself. But this second 79 is really making me paranoid. I know mid-year reports are important but do you think this grade will deny me?

@DynoMyte, I’m sorry to hear about your car accident. Getting a second 79 will not improve your chances, and it’s not sensible to consider yourself “paranoid” under any circumstances where you’re not confident in being accepted at a school with a single digit acceptance rate.

Very seldom will one thing result in rejection. If the rest of your application is as strong as you say, hang in there. Presumably you have applied to a wide range of schools that you’d be happy to attend in the statistically likely event of not being accepted to Yale.

Thank you. I have indeed applied to several schools, and I do have a really good back up option already waiting. But Yale is still my dream school. There isn’t much else to say but I should mention I got a 720 on my Math SAT (2110 Total) and a 29 on the math section of the ACT (32 Composite). I can assume those will be taken into consideration as well?

Not an expert about this or anything, but I’m confident that the 79 will not keep you out if you were someone who would have been admitted otherwise.

Good luck, friend! I’m trying for Yale too with QB regular decision.

@Dynomyte: Does your GPA place you in the top 10% of your high school’s grading class? According to Yale’s Common Data Set, 95% of admitted students were in the top 10% of their graduating class.

Then, regardless of your 79 in Calc BC, you are very much within Yale’s range! So, the determining factor will NOT be your GPA or test scores, but rather your teacher recommendations, essays, and EC’s – probably in that order. Best of luck to you!
