Middle age weight gain?

I feel a lot better when I am gluten free. I definitely cheat at times, but it certainly helps when those at work know/ think you’re gluten free. So no to the donuts, cakes, etc. ( I’m also allergic to nuts, so that also cuts down on sharing in the office treats.)

This is why I like being gluten free. Less temptation. Ice cream yes, cake and donut no. When I go on vacation I give in to temptation, a little bit.

@abasket - sent you a PM!

I do the same abasket - I pack all of my food for the day. I plan out a weekly menu as well. I certainly don’t stick to it 100% but it removes any decision-making on a hungry stomach.

I had to go low fat vegan recently. Did it for weight loss, which came extremely easy but then I realized that my IBS issues went away. I would like to have a scientific reason why that happened but the reason is elusive at the moment. I eat plenty of gluten items so I know that isn’t it. Regardless, I am loving life this way.

Shall we each set a goal for the week?

What I did today was parking my car in the middle distance of two shops and walked to both shops. In the past because of efficiency, I parked very close to the shop and then drive to the other shop.

“Shall we each set a goal for the week?”

Great idea, missypie! Here is mine (I will leave my marathon training out): walk to my commuter bus stop instead of taking the stinky city bus after work! It only takes 20 minutes and, paradoxically, sometimes it is faster than taking the city bus.

How about someone starting a thread for more distant athletic goals? I’m not much of a thread starter, but I need some motivation. And inspiration. The diet and exercise thread is too overwhelming.

I have thought about starting a thread on healthy office lunches/snacks. The deli next to my office closed and I am packing lunch these days. Would anyone be interested in this?

I would be, FallGirl. I think that’s a great idea for a thread - perhaps we could also share any recipes there. I’m in a food rut.

The D/E thread welcomes newbies! No need to start reading at page 1 to join in! I know people say the thread is overwhelming and some of the folks are too die-hard, but to be honest, the thread is long and involved because most of us on it are dedicated and have had success and KEEP AT IT! Many threads are started on this topic, but the thread is only as long as the motivation lasts for. So, the D/E thread? Maintains motivation and gets results!

That said, setting a goal is always a good idea. A small weekly one is a great start. It could be diet or exercise related. Pick one, or pick both!

My goal is going to be a 1/2 hour of gardening of some sort, each night this week in addition to my regular exercise routine. The gardening is good exercise and my yard needs some time and attention! So, an additional 1/2 hour, 5 times this week will result in 2.5 hours of additional “active” time.

Last night my S and I took a bike ride! 20 minutes and my legs were hurting from lack of exercise. (I sit behind a desk all day) My goal is to continue that, with or without him at least 3-4 days a week. The more I do it, the less my legs will hurt!

I tried to get off the floor from a cross-legged position and couldn’t even begin to do it. My butt got about an inch off the ground. There is no way! I can run marathons, but can’t get off the floor!

Abasket, do you live in a mosquito-y area? If so, how do you deal with mosquitoes during your evening yard work ?

YES. Right now the mosquitos are pretty bad! But I work days so evenings are the only option. I just use a bug spray and hope for the best. I do have a few bites. But I have a community garden, lots of flower beds at home and often have to cut the grass on our double lot corner yard so I have to be out there!

We have West Nile in our area and I know a couple of people whose lives were changed forever due to it. Do you put bug spray on your face? The mosquitoes swarm our faces and I can’t bring myself to put repellant on my face.

Is there a “Faces” repellant product just like there are sunscreens made just for faces?

This thread helped me restart my tummy exercise. I am not overweight but my waistline is getting wider fast.

You could always apply some repellant (maybe a more mild type rather than DEET filled!) to your hands and then apply to “safe” areas of your face - chin, cheeks, forehead. Wash your hands afterwards and then wash your face (and body) once gardening work is done.

I usually find by applying spray to my arms, legs, neck area that that keeps the critters away from my face. Cases of West Nile too here in our state - but the #'s are very, very small compared to the population. Not going to keep me from going outside!

I agree, it is very welcoming. Nothing wrong with being die hard, that’s what gets results. But it moves so quickly, there are so many daily posts, that it’s impossible for me to keep up on, and I feel like I’ve missed too much. If I ask a question, probably 50 people have already addressed that question earlier in the thread, and I don’t want to waste people’s time!
