Middle age weight gain?

Glad you never take offense!

Sounds like a lot of weeds, there, abasket. Hey if you want even more exercise, we have so many weeds, you could get your exercise for a month!

Met my pathetically modest goals for today. Yay.

Yes, yay!!!

Tonight was mostly bush trimming (involved a power tool AND a ladder ) - woohoo!!! A little weeding at the end.

Come over to my house.

My work is no where near done yet - I’ll be out there every night this week if possible. Love a big yard, but, well, the work…

@1214mom - start from standing. It’s easier to start training the strength and technique from standing rather than getting all the way down then trying to get back up to start. If you start from standing then you only go down as far as you can to begin with. Your start/finish positions are standing with feet together.

Ok, that is interesting. I started and went as low as I could–maybe 80% down and then back up.
I always could ski but what I never could do, so did not downhill ski (but was great at cross country), is get myself up when I fell.
I do think this has a lot to do with core strength, which is my downfall. I have a weird rib structure and when I do anything core, such as crunches, I suffer for days.

Saintfan, feet together or can they be crossed?

I can sit down on the floor without using a hand or knee if I cross my feet first, but can’t stand up again without using either a hand or a knee. So I guess I would get a 9 on that test. But my abdominal muscles are very weak, probably because I’ve had major abdominal surgery so many times. So I can’t do situps either unless I hook my toes under something. I bet I could have done it in high school!

Well, I walked to and from the bus stop today.

H & I walked around Lowes today–REALLY hot and they had A/C. Was working on the sitting & standing but my muscles are sore from prior days and prefer that I use one hand to assist in rising, so I have gone down from a 10 to a 9, which is still respectable.

H & I have been wrestling with putting up a shelter for him to do some work under. It’s too hot to do it under the sun, so this provides some shade & protection from the UV. It was sitting unused at Dad’s, so we are helping him declutter by taking it!

No crossed feet for the back lunges - it is not a test but an exercise to improve those muscles and techniques needed to get up off the floor gracefully as we age.

@busdriver11 - I feel exactly the same about the diet & exercise thread.

I have a couple of, not distant, but semi-distant goals. First (as I may have already mentioned, but honestly am too tired to go back and look), I have a dress I want to look great in at an event in two months. And second, in November I’m having my biennial DEXA, and my goal is for my numbers to be better than they were 2 years ago. They don’t have to be much better, just a little skosh better, and I will be over the moon.

Well, those aren’t athletic goals, I guess. They are goals that my athletic efforts will help with – I hope! But I think about those two things every day, and they push me to do that extra effort.

Took two long (2.5 mile) walks on the weekend. I walk the dog early AM and am trying to go longer. I was planning to do treadmill, but just can not stay motivated for it. So I have decided that as long as the weather is ok I will do the outside walking as I enjoy it and can stick to it.

The good/bad news is that I heard back from my doctor and my thyroid is fine. So sadly, I am just getting fat. I think I will follow along on the D/E thread. The thing is, I know what to do but I lack the motivation and time to do it. I have a gym membership, but I prefer to be outside walking and working in the yard. I spend all day inside sitting at a desk and I need fresh air!! But, considering my current situation, it’s time to get back to it. I am going to start tracking my eating to raise my awareness - I’m sure that my meals are healthy, but I must cheat more than I realize with bites of this and that. It makes me sad that I look like a little sausage in my summer clothes so I will use that as my motivation. That, and if I don’t get this under control now, I will be a mess this winter.

FallGirl, I gained a lot of weight when my father died followed soon after by my beloved Lab. I used to walk the dog over to visit my dad. When he died, I still had the dog to walk, but when I had no dog to walk…hellooooo donuts! I now enjoy walking two Labs - dog walking is highly endorsed as a form of exercise. I too hate the treadmill.

Hope I’m not repeating myself here - with so many diet/exercise threads going on I can’t always remember where I posted what! I injured my ankle in May - thought it was a sprain but it didn’t really heal fully. Finally went to the doc and am having a MRI this week. Already thinking and worrying about what I will do for cardio if I’m not able to run. I don’t want to get old.

@sabaray I gained 15 lbs in the 4 months of my dad’s final illness (and had my annual exams soon after – my doctors were NOT amused! ). It wasn’t reduction in exercise because I wasn’t doing any at the time. It was pure stress eating.

Hello sabaray!

Same here, same here, same here.

Although I really hated reading the post about how much exercise it takes to burn off an Oreo, that was on my mind yesterday on the treadmill…I was thinking of how many minutes it would take to burn off a package of M&Ms. And yes, I would much prefer skipping the M&Ms than doing the extra time on the treadmill.

I have also realized that for me, fitness has to become a “want to” vs. a “have to.” I thought that with an empty nest, I would have a lot fewer “have to’s” but it seems like there are almost as many (aging mother, etc.) In 2009 our family hiked down and up the Grand Canyon. I had no problem putting in time on the stairmaster and treadmill training for that trip.

Next summer, my son will get married and I will have my 40 year HS reunion. So getting in shape for those events will be my motivation.

As for the Diet/Exercise thread, I participated quite a while ago, but so many of the folks over there are accomplished athletes. It’s like having a Reading thread and encouraging someone who is just learning to read to participate when much of the discussion is about how to get through Finnegan’s Wake…both worthy of discussion but on entirely different levels.

Mention of distant fitness goals: I have taken up running again as part of my quest to return to the slim and fit person I was in my 20s (as well as reduce the need for knee replacements). I found this age-graded calculator: http://www.runningforfitness.org/calc/racepaces/agtimes

My goal is to be at the same percentage of the world record for the mile NOW that I was at 25. I have improved my percentage from 49% to 57%… It may take a few years to get to 69.6%.
