Middle Eastern thread!

i dont go to university yet…just finished my junior year, yayy…in canada obv…lubna enad? was s/he at st-chris…which year?

i’m from qatar and going to mcgill in septermber in 2005

Hey hey… Joseph from Egypt/turkey/Syria here, but born and raised in houston, tx. I’ve been in Dubai for the past five years…
I just finished my junior year, but i’ve been really stressing out over getting into a somewhat decent college in the u.s… i’m thinking Seattle U or UT Austin – do any of you have any clue if living overseas or having dual citizenship (usa/egypt) will help my getting in in the states? my GPAs not outstanding (bordering 3.0), but i just scored bout a 1950 on my SAT… any input would be awesome, thanks

Hey Joseph, nice to see you on this forum. Which high school do you attend? ASD? Dubai College? Choueifat? I will probably be visiting your high school in the fall to talk about Michigan.

Your GPA is a little low for Texas, unless you are a resident of the State of Texas. I am not familiar with Seattle U., but you do have a shot at the University of Washington.

Anyway, what do you intend to major in?

Hey
Yeah I go to ASD! quite a coincidence… I actually AM a resident of Texas, would that help much?
funny that you mentioned it, but University of Washington was actually my first choice up until i recently gave up the idea on account of my low gpa…
Seattle U is a private u which i understand has standards slightly below those of UW… I’d actually preffer either to UT

As for a major, i’m thinking public relations, communications, maybe business - something in that area… i know UT has a great business school, not so sure about UW though…
also once again, do you think living abroad would help at all?

Yes, living abroad will help…a little. they will see it as an experience worth noting. And your being a Texas resident definitely helps. Texas is 95% in-state. Clearly, it is much easier to get into UTA as a resident of the state than an international or a non-resident.

This said, I still think your chances at Texas will be hurt by your GPA. Did your GPA improve over the years? Did it get worse? Did you always have a 3.0?

Try to re-do your SAT and do your best to do well your first couple of quarters of your senior season.

Hey
Alright, got it… Right, the thing is my GPA actually went down over the years. I started my freshman year with about a 3.4, and I got two semester 2.8’s which brought it down quite a bit. I did have a pretty hard schedule though… 2 ap’s, advanced math, and i’m taking two more ap’s next year.
as for EC’s, i’m doing this leadership program in prague in about a week, starting a club at school, and already arranged for volunteer work at the nearest hospital. I’m hoping that’ll help.
anyways, thanks for your help.

Joseph, by all means apply to Texas. You obviously have a shot since you are a resident of Texas and you have a solid SAT score. But your GPA (especially since it has a downward trend) is going to hurt you. You should apply to schools that are a little easier to get into. Schools like Indiana University-Bloomington, University of Arizona etc… I will do some research on other good schools with strong B schools or good communications programs and I will get back to you.

Hey ppl Heeeeelllllppppppppppppp
I’m american/british/iraqi residing in Jordan (yeah I know what your thinking about!!) and I’m a poor little thing thats aiming high, very high. To simplify I wish to get into the following universities:
Ivies-(Dartmouth)
Johns Hopkins
MIT
Northwestern
Boston C
Boston U
Amherst
Duke

and my safeties is (St. Louis)

However no dreams go as one wishes, there are many obstacles:

  1. I’m not from the WOW high schools in Jordan (e.g. ABS, ACS…etc), coz those schools offer IB, AP…etc and mannnnyyy ECs. I come from the Jubilee School(the school that has an IQ entrance exam), thats OK, but the curriculum is the Jordanian one(although it is enriched) (except for English, I take American, british, and other literature writen in english) and A level Biology.
  2. My SATs :(, there bad in contradiction to my 4.0 GPA, they suck
My SAT 1 verbal: 510 (hellp me)
    Math: 700
    writing: 610
    SAT 2 math iic: 680
    chemistry: 720
    Biology: 680

However I’m retaking the SAT I this fall
3)The students from the prestigious schools mentioned above are applying by BULK to the same schools and my chances aree getting lower.

So, can someone helllllpppp meeee, I just finished my Junior year.
And if there is someone who is kind enough( who has been admitted to any of my dream universities) to help me with my application, I’d be grateful

Byeezzz Reply soon

You are aiming a little high. Your SAT is about 200 points below the MIT minimum and about 100 points below the other schools’ minimum. The only schools where you have a realistic chance are BC and BU, and even then, they are reach/matches. If you can improve your SAT significantly, you stand a chance, but otherwise, I would start looking at more reasonable schools like Wisconson-Madison, Indiana-Bloomington, George Washington etc…

What do you want to major in? I mean, Dartmouth and Amherst have nothing in common with MIT and Johns Hopkins. MIT and Johns Hopkins are mainly Social Science, Engineering and Science powerhouses. Amherst and Dartmouth offer more of a LAC education. MIT and Johns Hopkins are very serious think-tanks. Amherst and Dartmouth are far more collegiate. MIT and Johns Hopkins are urban, Amherst and Dartmouth especially are rural.

You’ll have a better chance if you can boost up your verbal score. Check out Barron’s guide to the SAT and learn the vocabulary - it’ll help loads.

Hello, Joseph again. It’s been couple months, and i completely forgot about this thread…I hope people are still paying attention to this.
Since i last posted, I actually talked to a Univ. of Washington admissons concellor and he said I had a shot at getting in. I’m not putting all my faith in that, I really want to go somewhere international. Somewhere north maybe. I’d love seattle, but I’m also thinking Boston perhaps … To be honest, I can’t stand texas. Anyone have any idea of any not-too-bad universities in decent-sized cosmopolitan cities? Cost isn’t really a problem. Alexandre, any news on those schools you mentioned? Arizona seems a bit too random for me… ah well. Ciao, thanks.

What about UChicago? great school, top academics. horrible weather though.

Hey
I think that’d be aiming a little to high for me nkay. but thanks.

oh, ok; what about UIllinois at Urbana-Champaign? Pick up a college guide like Fiske or the Princeton Review and have a browse at all the urban schools available.

Why should Israelis be considered “middle eastern?” Its not like the land was rightfully their’s anyways.

beats me! Anyway, this thread has been dead for 7 months why did u revive it?!

I thought it was the one you started.

Guys, let us not allow politics to entire this thread. This thread is about students wishing to know more abot universities…not about politics.

anyway i started a new one called MET…check it out
