Hi HCos12893, How are the Humanities (English, History) and Math programs at Middlesex? I like to know if most of your teachers are inspiring and dedicated. What do you find special about these programs? Thanks.

My son (freshman) seems to like all his teachers, which is not easy, he is very picky. He particularly likes AP computer for the challenge and Art History for the fun stories.

Hey Invent,

The Humanities are very strong at Middlesex. All english and history classes are taught around the Harkness table with a strong focus on discussion. What you’ll find in many schools that use the harkness table, especially MX, is that the class is not taught based on what happened, but why it happened. For example, say you are in AP English like myself and your homework assignment is to read a scene in Hamlet. Okay so. This scene may only be 5 pages long and you could probably breeze through it in all of about 3 minutes. BUT because our classes are based on “Why?” rather than the “What” you will find those 5 pages may take you an hour. Why? Because you analyze every line with annotations and analysis based on the reading. The teacher will never ask what happens; your grade in the class is based on your analysis of the reading and your ability to support your argument with assertion and evidence from the reading. ie. for example in play, the Ghost may on the surface just be a tempting creature to Hamlet. But after analysis, we see that this ghost is actually a representation of the dark side of Hamlet himself, and the ghosts use of the word “upsurpst” is a symbol of the larger theme throughout the play; an inversion of hierarchy. Our english classes train us to make that kind of analysis without hesitation. History is the same way - not only is it just about what happened…but why it happened? Why did army x attack army y? Was this justified?

On the other hand, Math is taught the standard style with desks but classes are limited to about 12 kids. This semester, I have been struggling with precalc so my teacher, who is great, offered to meet with me 1on1 every week so I dont fall behind.

The teachers are very dedicated, hand picked, very smart, and overall just good people. Thers even a rumor going around that my english teacher has the highest GPA on record at princeton, which doesnt surprise anyone. Middlesex is a great place.

Thank you AW6 and allnew. That’s great! :)

why does your school have an inappropriate name?
It reminds me of in-the-middle-of-sex

Middlesex is located in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Middlesex County was established in 1643 and was, I would imagine, named after Middlesex, England.

When I went to a rival school in the early 80s we used to call Middlesex the “Neuter School”.

:-)

this is a serious question haha…
is there a lot of partying/drugs at mx like i’ve heard on other forums elsewhere on the web?
thankss

ryork there are drugs everywhere. unfortunately at boarding schools the fact that we live together increases the public hysteria as to how many drugs there are. there are drugs at middlesex. there are drugs at andover. there are drugs at exeter. there are drugs at groton. and there are drugs at your school. we all have them sadly.

i dont believe middlesex has any more drugs than any other school but thats just me, all i can say is that it exists, and the vast majority of our school does not partake in those activites
