Midtown Manhattan Blackout

Just turned on the news to see that there’s a blackout in Manhattan. Anyone know what caused it? I wonder if the subways are also affected.

Subways are affected. My kid is there and safe but very scared.

I have power because I am on the East Side, but have my candles out just in case. My kids just checked in too. I told them to stay inside. Time Square is out and most of TV stations are around there.

Only 45K affected. That is about the same as a minor midwest storm.

Transformer fire

Yup. The only lines running in Manhattan are the numbered lines

The news people are all saying that the last blackout was in 1977 but there was also a major one in 2003. Once again I found out news on CC before any other internet source!

Transformer fire.

I was happily watching Netflix when a CC friend emailed me to let me know there was a thread about NYC blackout.

And 2012, but that was the result of Sandy

We were eating dinner in the 90’s on the west side and had no idea until my MIL called me. The weird thing is that the major power outage in NYC from the 70’s occurred on the same day…July 13.

Heard they had to evacuate Madison Square Garden, where thousands were waiting for the Jennifer Lopez concert.

I texted my kids. One lives in Brooklyn. No problem there. The other lives in midtown Manhattan (top end of Chelsea near 8th Ave.). They both said they were ok. No blackout.

I remember the one in 77. I had just graduated from high school! I will say my son has power in Manhattan (Manhattan, Kansas that is  )

The blackout is mainly affecting an area west of 5th Ave between 40th and 71st.

Lots of Broadway shows cancelled, and undoubtedly, lots of disappointed fans.

Luckily my D and her friend heard people talking about the blackout before they got on the Q train to get back downtown. What a mess. Hopefully it will be resolved quickly.

I also remember the one in 1977. The candle my mom used on the kitchen table left a burn mark on the tabletop that was there for years.
I believe the one in 1977 was also on July 13!!

@skieurope – The difference between the summer blackouts and the one during Sandy, is that the Sandy blackout was expected. The precise time was unknown, but residents were warned that a blackout was likely.

45k without power? Pfft.

Blackout? Transformer fire? — Squirrel! ?

I texted my NY son earlier. I saw the online story about the blackout before he heard about it. He’s in the 80s but east. I said avoid the subways. I felt so bad for the Austin, TX family on the news with their young daughter. Hamilton tickets and excited for the past year! And the J. Lopez fans heard 3 songs, then darkness and had to leave.
