Midtown Manhattan Hotel

We just got back from NYC where we stayed in this fun, mid-town place: The Pod Hotel, on east 51st and Lexington . I highly recommend the “bunk pod” for your kids. (Like a chic dorm room.)

I stayed at the Hilton New York last weekend. It was around $300 night (including taxes). The rooms were relatively large although the bathroom was not. I loved the location. Probably the best location I’ve stayed in out of the 6 times I’ve been there recently. Midtown but you didn’t have to go through Times Square if you didn’t want to. Close to central park.

I couldn’t do 4 people (especially women) in most 1 bathroom hotel rooms in NY. Way too small. We did, however, stay at the DoubleTree on Times Square a few years and had a 2 room suite and it had a very large bathroom (2 sinks) with a separate door for the toilet/shower area. It was a very nice hotel room. About $350 a night. Only downside was having to walk through Times Square. We had an upper floor room, zero noise at night.

Thank you all for replying! I will look into your suggestions today.

I second the Muse. Nice, boutique Klimpton brand hotel. Close to everything. I paid under $300 but I might have gotten it on Priceline.

The Milford Plaza, on Time Square, has always been reasonable.

There are always deals for NYC hotels on Gilt and Living Social. You might want to register just to peruse. Registration is free.

You might also agree to a time share spiel and stay at The Manhattan Club where there are huge suites.

You are intrepid. With snoring issues and insomnia, all four of us in a room would have been too difficult. We just don’t do that.

For us, a better option would be to find a discount boutique hotel (findable with just googling) and find and deal and get two tiny rooms.

Have fun!!! (And don’t listen to me – we spend too much on hotels.)

NYC is the second leg of our trip. We are flying from San Jose to Charleston, SC for a wedding and then up to NYC, then back to San Jose. It is an expensive trip with the airfare and hotels, so trying to economize in NYC if possible. A rate of $300.00/night is ok; I was just trying to see if we can do it for less and still stay in a nice place. The four of us always share a hotel room. It’s tight but I try and think of it as cozy and good family bonding (glass half full scenario!) Maybe we will outgrow this concept soon but not for this trip.

You will LOVE Charleston!!! We were just there. It is beautiful.

I wasn’t being critical. I was just observing that it didn’t work for my family. More power to you if it does. I’m all for saving money.

When we went to Paris when the kids were adolescents there were no four person rooms, only three, so we got used to sleeping two and two.

Courtyard midtown…see if price is better…east side

If you know anyone that lives in the City, see if perhaps they are a member of a private club with sleeping accomodations. There are numerous small to large private clubs that have reasonably priced “club” rooms. Nothing grand, but you’re not in New York to hang out in your room.

mythmom, I didn’t think you were being critical. I’d love two rooms, and that will probably be in our future with travel plans, but with two in college (one incoming freshman and one junior), money seems to be hard to hang onto these days. Plus we are putting two dogs in a kennel for the trip and that is very expensive.

UMDAD, We don’t know anyone who lives in the city. We will end our trip in CT visiting family there. Ellebud, I have heard that Charleston is beautiful and, although we won’t be there for long, will try and enjoy as much of it as possible.

<<if your="" budget="" doesn’t="" wind="" up="" allowing="" for="" manhattan="" hotel="" prices,="" you="" might="" consider="" staying="" in="" the="" harmon="" meadow="" area="" of="" secaucus,="" nj.="" there="" are="" about="" half="" a="" dozen="" hotels,="" all="" on="" single="" strip="" next="" to="" shopping="" center,="" served="" by="" commuter="" bus="" that="" takes="" into="" port="" authority="" terminal,="" which="" is="" convenient="" theater="" district,="">></if>

Just. . . no.
I live in Northern New Jersey (closer to the city than Secaucus) and commute in every day. NJ Transit is the last thing you should subject yourself to while on vacation. You’d be better off staying elsewhere in the city and taking the (more reliable) subway.

A much more realistic Jersey scenario would be to stay at one of the nice Newport-area hotels in Jersey City. From there, you can take the PATH train to 33rd street and then walk very easily to the theater district. You can also take the PATH to Ground Zero, the West Village, and Chelsea, and there are subway links at nearly every PATH station in the city.

Have you looked into the Residence Inn Times Square? (actually on 6th Ave in high 30s). It’s very convenient to everything, serves breakfast and you will have a small kitchen to store food.

While I’m a NJ resident, I would caution you from staying in NJ, so you can have the ‘real’ NYC tourist experience. (which includes locals cursing at you under their breath when you stop suddenly mid-block and look up)

We stayed at the La Quinta on 32nd Street a few years back. My girls were both young teenagers and we had a room with 2 queen beds that was not a bad size for Manhattan. The hotel had a free breakfast and it was a great central location. It was nothing fancy, but it worked well for the four of us and was reasonably priced.

I also stayed in a suite when I took my older D to college two years ago at the Fitzpatrick Manhattan on Lexington with another Mom who’s D was going to the same school, but it’s a bit more expensive.

We stayed at the Hampton Inn Times Square North. Decent hotel, not fancy but clean. Easy walk to Central Park and Times Square. Located in the Theater District. Reasonable for NYC. June is a good time to go, most prices drop after May. Even Marriott Marquis right on Times Square has a good price drop.

We stayed at the Westin in Times Square for 4, price $275.

Try W in Hoboken (which is also a really fun town)…not cheap but way better value than midtown. Easy PATH ride to Manhattan. Great NYC skyline views. Try expedia.

My neighbors claim they booked the Waldorf Astoria a few years ago for about $150/night. Just for kicks I tried a random website that quoted $329 for 6/2…less than I expected.
