Our family will be staying in NYC in late June for four nights. We have been advised to stay in midtown Manhattan to be close to the tourist sites. We are a family of four from California with a 20 year old son and 17 year old daughter.

Do you have recommendations for hotels in the $250.00-$275.00 range? Or is this too low for a decent hotel? Please advise. I’m overwhelmed when I go to Tripadvisor and search hotels in that range. We want a nice place, but nothing too fancy, since we’ll be touring all day and collapsing once we get back to our hotel.

We are staying at The Muse New York - 305 a night for four, all in. Near Times Square.
We are Klimpton club members - so that may get us a better rate.

Eventi Hotel is by MSG and Penn Station.
Has a view of the Empire State Building when you enjoy the free wine happy hour on a patio.
Easy to hail a cab, don’t use the doorman, just walk a half block up and stick your arm out.
It is a Kimpton Hotel.

I recently stayed at The Carlton Hotel, at 88 Madison Ave. It was in the price range that you are looking at and very convenient to the subway. I walked to and from the Theater District, about a mile away, maybe slightly over a mile, depending on the theater or restaurant you are going to.

You can get a room with two queen beds in that price range, and maybe even a bit lower depending on the day of the week, at the Edison which is in a great location at 47th and Broadway. It’s a decent hotel, nothing luxurious but is in the center of everything theatre-related, and an easy walk to shopping, museums, Central Park, Rockefeller Center, a million restaurants, etc.

We are staying at the Le Parker Meridien. Three max to a room. I don’t know about suite occupancy. We are getting a good deal: $300 per night. (But there is the burger joint in the lobby.) New York is really really expensive (and we’re from SoCal so we are used to expensive.)

I have stayed at the Benjamin, it is nice and location is great, right next to #6 subway. I personally prefer the East side to the theater distric because it is quieter.

Hotel prices are highly variable in NYC. Your best bet is to check with a booking site like hotels.com. The Roosevelt is an older midtown hotel with larger rooms that might have some availability in that price range. The City Club near Grand Central is one of my favorites, but not all their rooms have two beds. If you are willing to go to the Upper West Side, which is more residential, On the Avenue at 77th has some larger rooms.

The Hilton chain is having a summer sale, with pretty good discounts on advance-purchase rates. Look for “The Great Getaway” sale.

We have stayed at the Hilton in mid-town. It’s a convenient location and a very nice hotel, but normally very pricey. We have also stayed at the Hampton Inn Times Square South. It’s not really in Times Square, but in the Garment District, which isn’t terribly inconvenient. However, if I recall correctly, we had a room with two DOUBLE (not queen) beds, which is what we’ve encountered in most Manhattan hotels other than the snazziest. We’ve stayed in several other hotels in the general midtown/garment district area over the years and I think they’ve all been double/double. That can be a little cozy with teenagers!

If your budget doesn’t wind up allowing for Manhattan hotel prices, you might consider staying in the Harmon Meadow area of Secaucus, NJ. There are about half a dozen hotels, all on a single strip next to a shopping center, served by a commuter bus that takes you into the Port Authority Bus Terminal, which is convenient to the theater district, Times Square, and of course, subways to anywhere else you want to go. There is an Embassy Suites, where I think the room configuration is Queen/Queen with a sofabed in the living room.

I recently checked on prices and the Sheraton NY Hotel seemed to be among the less expensive ones (still expensive though) that have 3 or more stars. I haven’t stayed there so I don’t know if it’s decent or not.

Here is my pet peeve. We have 3 women in our family, plus H who is a metrosexual (look it up if you don’t know). We probably could all share one room, but the idea of sharing ONE bathroom would be a deal breaker for us. We would usually get a place with minimum 1.5 bath, hence suite hotels.

VRBO (Vacation Rentals By Owner) to rent an apartment rather than a hotel; and
if you don’t mind women in one queen bed, and guys in the other, I have stayed at Chelsea Savoy on 23rd and 7th Ave. Not fancy, but clean, nice people running the place, and very reasonable (we paid $238 p/n all inclusive (taxes etc.), wi-fi extra). Close to everything, subway and buses right outside the door.

They do not show up on any travel search engine, but I’ve stayed there twice, once with one other person and one with 3 others. Ask for a room not facing the street, they are much quieter!
