Midwest schools for music business degree

I’m requesting this for a friend. Does anyone know of an official list of schools in the Midwest that have music business programs? They have ruled out Bradley and Southern Illinois University. The student really wants to stay in Illinois, but there are places in Indiana, Wisconsin and Iowa that are closer than Southern Illinois, so any schools within a six or so hour drive of the suburban Chicago area would be good.

I keep thinking there must be a database somewhere of schools with this kind of degree.

teri- here’s 2 places 2 start- <a href=“AES Education Directory by Geographic Area”>AES Education Directory by Geographic Area: Central Region, USA/Canada; mostly schools offering music tech/recording, but there are some with music business programs as well.

<a href=“Search Results for “msd/default.aspx[/url]” – Strings Magazine”>Search Results for “msd/default.aspx</a&gt” – Strings Magazine; is a searchable music school directory. It lists majors, degrees, faculty, etc. by institution.

Off the top of my head, Ball State, Depaul possibly, Indiana.

I am not sure what you mean by music business, but University of Cincinnati, Electronic Media program is considered one of the best in the world. They focus on runing radio and tv stations, audio engeneering and have courses in the music business. Go to www.uc.edu and click on academics then on Conservatory of Music and then Electronic media or go here:http://emedia.ccm.uc.edu/gotflash.html</a></p>

and click on future students and then curriculum.

Daughter has looked into music business majors as well, but we haven’t had much luck with Midwest schools.

DePaul has some classes in music business (but no major). They’re slanted more towards a music major who wants to take some busines classes (and not the other way around, like my daughter.) Northeastern (in Boston) has a “real” music business major, andI think Miami (FL) does, too.

If you broaden the search to the “upper South”, Belmont University in Nashville is supposed to be excellent.

Belmont was the first school I mentioned, but friend’s son is intent on staying much closer to home. I actually did a search on Princeton Review and came up with some more schools; while it says nothing about the quality of the program, it hopefully gives them more options than they thought they had originally.

Webster U in St. Louis has a Music Business certificate (18 credits) for their music majors.

Columbia College Chicago has a music business major

Oklahoma City University

I see this was posted a while ago, but just in case you come back to check. There’s a great Music Business Program in Minnesota at McNally Smith. My Cousin is currently a student there and has an awesome internship lined up for the summer.

Here’s their URL - [McNally Smith College of Music | Music Degrees From the Top Music Business School and Music College](http://www.mcnallysmith.edu)

Good Luck!

NYU/Steinhardt also has a joint music and business degree which looks really great. Not in the midwest, but might be of interest to others.

Belmont for sure. But I hope they realize how difficult it is to work in that industry, by difficult, I mean to even get a job. The Tennessean had an article about the bleak prospects for graduates even from Belmont’s program that might be worth googling for.

Here are a few good music business programs in and around the Midwest Region. Music Business can, of course, encompass a huge number of areas, so without knowing generally what the questioner is/was looking for, I’ll just rattle off a few. Having worked in the music industry for a bunch of years, I’ll also comment that it isn’t as hard to break in as you would imagine. I went to Southern Illinois University, by the way, and graduated from their Music Business program, which I thought was pretty good, actually!

Also, when looking for music business programs, be sure to also look for “music engineering”, “broadcasting”, “audio engineering”, and “recording engineering” programs as well. They often have different names at different schools.

Choose a music business degree program at a school where you’ll think you’ll be happy. The real successes are all up to you anyway, and NOT your school.

Here are a few to try on for size:

Columbia College
Arts Institute of Illinois/Minnesota/Wisconsin
Flashpoint Academy
Madison Media Institute
Brown College (a lot of radio people go here)
Full Sail University (Florida, but still awesome)
Southern Illinois University
Eastern Illinois University
Western Illinois University
International Academy of Design and Technology
McNally Smith
Belmont

Others worth a VERY serious look:

Mike Curb School of Music (Nashville)
Berklee School of Music (Boston)
University of Miami (Miami!)
NYU (New York)

Good luck,
Doc

Try Elmhust college, Elmhurst Illinois! Good luck!

My son has also been looking for a good school that offers Music Business. The University of Saint Thomas in St Paul Minnesota has a good program. We have also looked at Columbia in Chicago.
What I want to know is are the jobs out there for these kids that go into this career path and if so what is the wage bracket? My husband is worried that he will never pay off his college debt with this career path. Would sure love to talk to someone in the business. Any ideas?

I have a couple of friends that go to Millikin University in Decatur, Illinios. They major in Music Business there and have all raved about the program.

I know someone majoring in Music Business at University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN, little further away than you like I guess you said 6 hours, but this would be about 8 hours or so from Chicago.

St Thomas University in St Paul Mn has a music business program. My son and I toured there and we really liked what they had to offer.
