Just BTW, my Midwestern kid (Illinois born and raised) had a great time at Midd, had a great social life, and made some very close friends. So did most other midwestern kids that she knew. While they may be underrepresented, they fit into NESCACs pretty well.
I’m from St. Louis and a Vassar alum. I always flew home for breaks, often had a layover in Chicago, and there were always several other VC types on my flight! There were three kids at Vassar from my high school, and two from a neighboring high school. Most of my Vassar friends were actually from the West Coast, but even though the East and West coasts are the most represented at Vassar, I didn’t feel at all out of place as a Midwesterner! My son is headed to Vassar in the fall (but I now live in NJ so he will be a dime a dozen. haha)
Thanks for all the helpful responses. I’m glad to hear so many midwestern kids have had great experiences!
My son is from Ohio and is at a NESCAC school, Trinity College. He went to a public school his whole life and is not currently playing a Varsity sport (although he did in high school). He’s also not part of any marginalized racial or gender/sexual minority group, which might lead to some additional programming.
While he’s had a great academic experience, he does feel a bit like a fish out of water sometimes. Many of the students know each other already from boarding school interactions or playing each other in sports.
I just wanted to pass along another perspective in case it’s a helpful reflection point.
Thank you for sharing his experience.
