Hi I have applied to UCLA as a bizecon major and am really worried about acceptance. I am fairly competitive. I applied with a 3.88 GPA (will update in a few days with winter grades pushing it up 3.9). However, I am not in TAP. A lot of factors in my life such as work and the military prevented me from participating.

The only pre-reqs I haven’t fulfilled are Calculus B and Managerial Accounting. They will be done by Spring.

I am currently serving in the Marine Corps. Reserve. Will this give me a leg up during the admissions process? How significant is TAP? I want UCLA so bad!!!

Don’t worry, they know that not everyone can complete TAP. I worked full time while in community college and therefore had to apply without it, but I was accepted into UCLA anyway. I would say your military experience will probably look more unique than the hundreds of identical TAP applications they receive.

On UCLA’s literature about the personal statement this year they added a section on military service and how if you’re a vet (or serving now), they want to hear about it.

I also asked how military service plays into the admissions process at the transfer center at my school. They said while there is no official rule that talks about it, they were under the good impression that it really does give you a “brownie point.”
