Does anyone know anything about the Sociology Major at Millersville? My little sister is 17, currently in 11th grade, and recently was looking into it… I wasn’t sure if anyone here knows anything about the school. We plan on visiting in April. We don’t really know anything about the school, or their program… so any thoughts/info/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Fendergirl,
I’ve visited Millersville three times. Twice with my daughter and once with my son. In fact, my son was accepted there and I think he and my husband will be going to an accepted students day at the end of the month.

The campus itself is very nice with the buildings clustered fairly close together. There’s a neat pond behind the admissions building where a pair of swans live and open space that you can imagine stuents hanging out on nice days. The campus is larger and imho, nicer then York, but fairly similar. The students that I know that are attend Millersville would probably share a lot of similarites with York students - B students big majority are from PA. Suprised you didn’t look into it when you were looking at colleges since it’s so similar to York and only about an hour away. While education is no longer the biggest major on campus, I think it’s a close second. Sorry to say I don’t know anything about the sociology major.

I looked briefly into Millersville for my son. The reason it didn’t make it onto our list is that they seemed not to have housing available when you got into the upper classes, which was important to my son. (who, by the way, Fendergirl, is going to York this fall) I may be mistaken on this, but something to look into.

My cousin’s daughter is a recent graduate of Millersville. She was living off campus her senior year- but it was in a townhouse that adjoined the campus and it sounded like that was pretty common. I think most freshman and sophomores live in the dorms but, just like the majority of colleges, they move off for junior and senior years.

I’ve got a few friends who go to Millersville (I’m from 1-2 hours away–my high school sends a lot of kids of Shippensburg, Millerville, IUP, etc.), and all of them seem really happy. I don’t know anything about their sociology major, but I do know that they have a reputation as the best PA state school to go to if you want to major in music. The campus is nice and the people have seemed friendly the couple of times I’ve been there.
Housing was mentioned earlier as a possible problem. I don’t know about difficulty getting a place to live as you get older, but I do think that they have a rather odd (to me) housing system. My understanding (hopefully accurate) is that there’s no lottery–it’s first come, first served (with the possible exception of freshmen, who I presume are guaranteed spots if they want them) with different school housing options costing different amounts of money. There are, for example, very nice, new, almost apartment style dorms that are more expensive than traditional dorms and it’s essentially just a matter of being willing/able to pay for that sort of things.
The other possible negative is that it seems to be quite a suitcase school. Many of the people I know go home on weekends fairly frequently, though the sophomores have begun doing so less this year than they did last. My sense is that there are a lot of cars on campus and it’s not hard to get a ride to most places in the state if you want one.
If you’ve got more specific questions, I’m certainly willing to try to answer them or ask any of my attending friends.

kathie, i didn’t like their choice of majors/minors when i was looking for schools… so i never went there. i wanted a place where i could major in business, but also take a bunch of art and Millersville doesn’t have much in the art department. (at least not at the time, not really sure about now)… i wound up minoring in visual communications, fine art, and photography.

I have two friends from Penn State York who transferred to Millersville, but i don’t really feel like bugging them about what their school is like… especially since they haven’t really talked to me much since going there.

As far as the housing thing, I googled “Millersville,University, housing” and found this, “2.You are guaranteed a room on campus if you pay your deposit by the February 16 deadline.”

I live about 2 1/2 hours from Millersville (closer to Kutztown) and our HS usually has about 1/2 a dozen kids go to M’ville a year. Because it’s a distance and many freshman don’t have cars, the kids from here don’t go home on weekends. I guess at any of the state schools it’s likely that students will go home, especially if they’re from within an hour or so. Just about all the kids that go to Kutztown from this area do come home on weekends. Is that true at York? My son was accepted there too and we’ll probably go for a re-visit.

One of the best things we did when we visited Millersville (son, this time) was hook up with two students that were majoring in computer science. They were able to give my son the inside scoop with enthusiasm. Perhaps happycynic has friends at Millersville that can put you in touch with a sociology major.

It depends… some kids go home for weekends, or go to visit signif. others… but there are usually people around to do things with. I can’t think of any weekend where I was alone at school. i think at the beginning people stay a lot and it’s easy to get to know people, and then as people start to go home for weekends you really don’t notice because there are always people around to do something with… maybe it’s playing video games, or seeing a movie on campus, or going to see a band play… i had some really good friends at school who had a band and i’d often go to their shows on weekends. one time i sold 25 tickets by myself, i was pretty proud :)

and kathie, my mom wanted her to look at kutztown, since as you know we live near there, but she’s afraid everyone will go home every weekend and doesn’t want to go there. she also says she wants to go somewhere where “everyone else isn’t going”
