Mines just launched the Golden Guarantee starting with the incoming class of '27

Mines Golden Guarantee - Undergraduate Admissions

They have had something similar- but only applied to a specific district/school.

If your student meets the criteria - this is a pretty nice school to have on the list as a true safety for admissions!!

Colorado School of Mines was part of a 3-way tie for D26. She went with RIT instead  .

But would have been very nice to have had this as an actual safety- would have taken the anxiety off a bit while waiting for decisions to come in!

Good luck to all who are applying this year!!

Doesn’t Mines also have some articulation relationship with community colleges in CO whereby students who attend CC and do well are guaranteed acceptance to complete their degrees? A great option (if it exists) for some CO residents.

My guess is that these kids were getting in anyway.

It’s a great school - I loved it (more than my son) and it’s got a great rep, but its selectivity has fallen over the years and it’s really not a hard in for the average + but many come on here with a reach or target when, in fact, it’s safe for that 3.6, 1400 kid.

Part of it may be that as they’ve let their selectivity drop, they seemed to have stop producing CDSs so it’s harder to get a sense of its difficulty/selectivity.

But I wonder if the state/school is looking to grow it.

Love this so much! Those guaranteed safeties are a big emotional win for students and takes so much of the anxiety out of the process.

We were just in Golden coming back from a wedding in the mountains…what a lovely, lovely town, beautiful campus, and fabulous setting!

Here’s a photo from the river that runs through town that leads up to the hiking trails. People were swimming, sunning, and tubing:

Yes- this!
Even though this school was an extremely ‘likely’ school for D26- having it be an actual guaranteed admittance sure would have been nice!

Curious how this is going to shape the school overall?
They state that 2/3 of admittances are at these requirements already. (They actually said that 1/3 did not meet every requirement and were encouraging students to apply even if they are not part of this guaranteed group)

According to the CSU FB page many high stats students are shocked when they don’t receive the highest academic merit award that CSU offers. To have Mines in their pocket when they find out that CSU isnkt going to be as cheap as they assumed it would be is a good move.

I am sure, but nice to make it explicit and keep kids from guessing IMO… it also gives kids time to “love it” and know it is their “assured” back up for a long time. I am not sure this is proven psychology, but my older’s favorite likely came in as an admit in Sept due to a direct admissions thing and because it was a given early on everything was compared to it all along. Other likely schools that came in EA in Dec and early Jan were not as exciting? By the end, that first direct admit likely was a finalist. I think if they hadn’t gotten in until January (normal cycle) it may not have been such a favorite in March. I am not sure it was ONLY because it was first (there was definitely a lot of fit things too), but I think was part of it.

Long way of saying I think this may help yield.

My 27 is applying to Mines, and already considered it a likely school but this re-affirms that is “likely” true, which which is nice. We toured and both loved the school.

There’s a difference between “likely getting in any way” and sure admit. Once you are 100% certain, you can start comparing all other schools to the certain one and it’s a way to knock other schools off your list. It also means that they can then interact with you as an accepted student. That made a big difference for S23 at the place he ultimately ended up as he felt they wanted him and continued to build the relationship.

Now, if they could also give you a guaranteed financial package with your early acceptance.

If the applicant pool stays the same, probably not much change.

But it is possible that the announcement could affect who applies.
