miniature?

My S will turn 11 in Jan 2008 and he is now 56 lbs (25.5 kg) in weight and 133cm (52.5 in) in height. The average of weight and height of the boys (same race) of his age are 34 kg and 142cm. His dad is 160 cm and 54 kg while his mom is 155 cm and 63 kg.

My S doesn’t like eating, he eats very little and he doesn’t like meat and always tries to stay away from fruits and vegetables. He eats no snack at all. Both his parents enjoy food a lot.

Before he turned 10, he was quite energetic and cycling or playing basket ball everyday. But within the last 12 months, he doesn’t like sports even when asked to play with his dad.

Unlike before, he always feels very tired and seems to be exhausted just playing outdoor games with his dad for 10 min. and claims that his muscle and joint pain. He is thin and very sensitivity to cold.

We bought to see several Family doctors, they all told me that nothing have to worry. Is it solely due to genes?

Do I need to worry?

The sudden loss of interest in sports/being active, the fatigue and muscle/joint pain would bother me more than his being small. Did your pediatrician understand that your son is always tired, gets exhausted after 10 minutes, and complains of muscle & joint pain? I’m not a doctor but it does sound like you might have cause for concern. It could be psychological or physical, but I’d think some tests to rule out a physical cause might be in order.

Have they tested his thyroid function?

no, because family doctor insisted that nothing have to worry. What is thyroid function test for kid?

It took some arithmetic, but at 160 and 155 cm, that means dad is 5’3 and mom is 5’0. Chances are that son is not going to be very tall, hence the reason the doctors aren’t alarmed at the below average height at his age. As far as eating- no meat, vegetables, fruits, or snacks? What does the boy eat?

Joint and muscle pain- could be dehydration for all we know. Or maybe he IS in a growth cycle and has growing pains. He should be eating.

What does he like to eat? Does he drink plenty of liquids? I’d be the most concerned about the lack of energy and eating.

he’s only eats rice with soy, nothing else

He drinks a cup of water everyday though I urge him to have more.

Sounds like you need to advocate for your child. I would be concerned that a normally active kid is now tired and not eating. I would request a second opinion from a pediatrician or a pediatric endocrinologist.

I’d add a dietician to the list. His diet is so poor, lacking protein, calcium, etc, it is no wonder that he is lethargic. I’m not suggesting he has an eating disorder, but he does need to know more about the connection between his mental and physical health and nutrition.

I echo the above. It would be wise to consult various specialists, to get to the root of the problem.
