Minimum Course Requirements?

I’ve been doing a little research for my parents about possible colleges for my brother and I’ve run into a little difficulty. I’ve been looking at a few NC schools (UNC-Asheville, UNC-Greensboro, Appalachian State) and they mention something about minimum course requirements. They say that 2 units of Social Sciences are required, one of which being US History. Where we live US History isn’t offered, will that affect his eligibility for admission?

Also the way they list science and math progressions is different. At the school we attend it is not Geometry, Algebra I or Algebra II. We do in 9-10th IGCSE Math and in 11-12th IB Math of varying levels. The same with science, it isn’t divided into Chemistry, Biology or Physics until 11-12th. And how do they define a lab science? With a proper school report will they be able to decipher his course of study?

Thanks for any help!

Colleges are used to translating course requirements for international students. Sometimes they already have experience with the foreign country’s school system, and sometimes the applicant has to help them by supplying additional information. You should contact the college. I wouldn’t worry about it being an obstacle, though.

Lab sciences are typically biology, chemistry and physics (provided the course has a lab). It isn’t a special course.

Colleges know about international applicants and education system of different countries. And as far as I know, U.S. History is waived for international applicants, just as foreign language is (unless your first language is english like in australia, england etc.).
In my school, the GC sends an extra piece of document that explains the school’s system briefly and also gives an explanation of the grading system and its US equivalent grade.
I’d suggest consulting with the GC or the college for more information.
