Ministry or Medicine?

I have decided where I will be attending school… Lipscomb University (Go Bisons!)… and I could not be more excited. As of right now, I am planning on being a Biology (Pre medicine) and Vocational Ministry double major with the hopes of becoming a doctor on the mission field. I do believe that I have the academic intelligence and drive to become a doctor, but lately, I have been unsure if I would rather pursue medicine or full time ministry (as in mission work). I think I am also struggling because both of my parents are very successful (one with a PhD and one with an MD) and it is sort of expected that I do something very successful with my life. I do have lots of shadowing experience in hospitals and clinics and I really enjoy it, but I also have a huge passion for studying the bible and telling others about Jesus. I also don’t know as much about what full time missionary life would look like on a day to day basis (so if you know anything about that, please let me know!) I am really conflicted. Any advice would be so much appreciated!

Doctor on the mission field sounds like the best of both worlds? There’s absolutely no reason you can’t do both. Many doctors also have a passion for studying the Bible and sharing their faith.

Do the MD. You can study the bible in a number of different places and ways.

I am a pastor’s wife who at one time seriously considered pursuing medicine on the mission field too. My life took other turns…I got nervous about how long it would take me to pay off my loans for medical school, and so how long it would take to go overseas. I ended up getting a Ph.D. in cell biology, meeting my husband, getting married, and now work with him in his ministry while also teaching biology at a local Bible school.

Last spring, I spent some time with a medical missionary who was at my undergrad the same time I was, but followed through with the medical school/ missionary plan. And you know what? They were both excellent paths! I admire her path, she admires mine, but I don’t think either of us would trade.

Getting your MD will open a lot of doors in places from which those of us in full-ministry are barred. With the demographics of the world these days, my first instinct would be to pursue the medical degree as far as you can. But I’m not you, and you’ll need to listen for your own calling. You have great options for getting Bible training at the same time you prepare for medical school…what a blessed place to be.

Are you a person of science or a person of faith? If science, go with the medical. If faith, go with the ministry.

@informative but the world isn’t black and white.

I’m a Christian too, so here’s my opinion;

I think you can definitely do both. Ministry isn’t like a 4-year college major where once you receive a certificate, you’re set and ready to go. Preaching the gospel and practicing your faith and the Christian love is a lifetime effort.

I personally will recommend that you study medicine first. My opinion is that the physical and emotional and spiritual are connected, and often if you can reach into more than one realm, it’ll be more helpful overall.
I agree with what Creekland and mdcmom said.

Also, may I recommend that you read “The Power to Heal” by Francis MacNutt. I think it can help you reconcile pursuing an MD and missionary work.
You can also check out samaritanspurse . org if you’re interested.

Last year I wanted the same thing that you’re wanting.
but going to medical school isn’t feasible because of financial reasons.
I definitely encourage you to make the most of what opportunities you have.
Remember that Paul had his own financially sustainment with his tent building (not sure of the English phrase), while he also preached the Gospel.

And just to make sure, I’m inexperienced in life because of age, so don’t think much about what i say lol.
I’ll pray that God’s will be done for you c:

I know a someone who did both (is an MD and a pastor). Has had a very rewarding career.

@informative I don’t think they are mutually exclusive, at least IMO.
