Obviously the words can have completely unrelated meanings since revolutionary could be used in reference to an actual war. However, as to the similar meanings you are thinking of, revolutionary would usually connote a fundamental change in something while groundbreaking refers to something new rather than a change.

I think there are some times where you’d use one word over the other.

Revolutionary to me means a concept that has the potential to completely reinvent an existing environment (re-evolution). I would call laparoscopic surgery a revolutionary advance in surgical technique that in many cases actually replaced older more invasive methods.

Groundbreaking to me just means moving into some new untried territory while not necessarily letting go of whatever’s been previous to it. I’d say Lasik surgery was a groundbreaking advance in ophthalmology, though people still wear contacts and glasses.

Revolutionary - internet
Groundbreaking - eBay

I’d be interested to hear what anyone else thinks, though. Maybe I’m just in essay mode this morning, ha ha.

I know what question you’re talking about. :)

Its the first word. Appalling means shocking and doesn’t fit into the context of the sentence. I know, I was mad too…
