How far would a minor in photography take a person? I want to major in
something business-related,
but could a minor in photography give me any small part-timeish jobs?
Thanks!
I had one photography class in college and learned enough that I could have done some jobs on my own - in black and white and if I had my own dark room because the class was entirely B&W film. So I’m sure a minor that includes several classes would definitely give you the resources you need to become a photographer. From there, it’s just experience that helps you getter better.
@musicfamily Thanks! Another question that I have is, what kind of jobs can people with a minor in photography get in the job market? This is regardless of the major…
The obvious would be photography studios, but that can also be boring, depending on what you like to do. Look at newspapers and magazines, even some ad agencies and web site developers. They all need photography. Some employ photographers, others use stock photography sources in which they pay a service fee to use their photos. Those stock photography services also need people to take the photos. Many companies also have in-house designers and photographers that handle their marketing and publications. There is also a whole world of photo editing in which all of these places need skilled people. Not too much around anymore in film, as almost everything has gone digital, but film does still have it’s place in a small, dark corner somewhere.
The thing about art-related careers, especially photography - they don’t always care if it was your major or minor or if you even have a degree. What matters is your skill and talent and willingness to learn. I am a graphic designer and have seen many people hired in the field with little to no education/experience other than playing around with things on their home computer. They are basically self-taught. A friend of mine works for a studio taking school pictures. She also does the editing herself. She had very little photography experience before working at the studio and never went to college. She is working on establishing herself to do her own work outside the studio. She is offering to do photo shoots for free, both inside and outside, to improve her portfolio. I know several photographers in the area have done similar things, and now have established businesses themselves. Definitely something to consider and your business-related major should help with that also.
@musicfamily Thank you so much! This was very helpful and I look forward to maybe doing photography on the side of whatever career that I chose to do.
You’re welcome @123365 and good luck!
