Minors in Fine Arts

Does anyone have any comments about any of the different Fine Arts (FA) minors? Do you enjoy the classes?

Fine Art classes are pretty enjoyable, although it depends on the professor. Most professors are pretty easy going and they’ll like whatever you produce alot of the times (Not necessarily a good thing at times). Alot of professors do respect you as an artist rather than a student I think… I’ve taken alot of classes like painting, drawing, sculpture, clay etc…

What field are you interested in? I used to be a Studio art major and now is Drawing minor.

There are several Fine Arts minors which include various media classes. I am kind of surprised that the Fine Arts minors require a lot of classes and I am wondering if they are very time consuming classes? What is the difference between these different Fine Arts minors? Is it worth it to do a Fine Arts minor because so many classes are involved? (i.e. 6-7 classes).

I’m considering a minor in Communication Design and am currently taking FA 102 Design Fundamentals and the class is A LOT of work. The class meets 6 hrs a week and requires at least 6 hrs of hw each week. So far we’ve been doing lots of “busy work” that stress rudimentary techniques. Hopefully other FA classes will be more fun.

What is appealing about the Communication Design minor? Is it really more for Annenberg communication students? I thought it sounded really good because it includes some business types of classes as electives and would sound good on a later college resume. My son has the impression that Communication Design is more for Annenberg students. Is this true? I am also concerned that the FA classes are very time consuming. Thanks so much.

Eck, i took Design Fundamentals and that class is not a fun class. It gets better as you goto upper level though, I heard Ewa is an excellent professor (teaches design 2, everybody apparently loves her. I had her for like 3 days so I have no idea)

Some FA classes are time consuming, others not so much. Upper division classes do require more time but it really depends on what type of artist you are. If you are a picky artist who like to work on one piece for like 20 hours then yes, it’ll take you time. If you like the just be wild and go with the flow and be done in 30 minutes, obviously its going to take you a shorter amount of time. It also depends on the professor.

I currently have 18 units with 1 upper division fine art class (I used to be a fine art major, i used to have 3 studios at once) but I can manage it without much problem. Homeworks are usually enjoyable if you like art (except like JTSO23 said, design fundamentals does seem like alot of busy work)

I suggest your son take some different fine art classes and see if he likes it. My adviser told me minors don’t really count all that much on resumes anyhow, ( as she tried to convince me against having a minor actually) so just tell him to choose a minor that he’ll enjoy more than anything. I’m a drawing minor because I want to improve my skills. My friend’s a math double major because she likes torturing herself mentally apparently. If he can’t deal with the work amount, all he has to do is drop the minor. But 6 classes throughout 4 years? not that big of a deal.

All the 4 Unit studio fine art classes are 3 hours long, 2 times a week though. Long yes, but its shorter than some other schools (6 hour studios! That would be amazing) so alot of times I dont have homework. I draw models alot in class so I can’t continue it outside of class anyhow
