Minors..

Is it possible to use a minor as a career changer down the road lets say you decide to minor in something different from your major?
I’m still not exactly sure how a minor works other than its there because you feel like learning about the subject matter.

A minor is basically a notation on your transcript. It won’t be much help for a career change because a minor confers no degree with it.

…although one does not necessarily need a degree in something in order to pursue a certain career.

a minor will be somewhat versatile in terms of the knowledge you gain from it or if it gives you any additional skills. it’s not as valuable as a double major but it’s something. it might be of some help if youre changing jobs/careers early on. if it’s something later in life, people probably dont care what your degree was in and probably where you got your degree too (they’ll look at work experience and ability for you to convert relevant skills to your new career).

usually people minor in something either because it compliments their major or because it’s one of their secondary interests. some people also pick up a minor because they have nothing better to do or because the minor may be easy so they want to boost their GPA or because their minor overlaps with a lot of their major’s classes and they go “oh might as well minor in it.”

what about for the sake of graduate school?

if grad school is the plan, then minoring could help you boost your GPA haha. it’s a common strategy that a lot of people do.

most graduate schools (master’s, Ph.D) focus on what you did in your major as well as the research you did in your major. although your minor might give you a different perspective or can be combined somehow with your major for a more interesting/diverse research project.

most professional schools (med, law, etc.) dont really care about minors. they look for the overall GPA but each one also looks at many other different factors (varies by each professional school). of course, a minor might help on the GPA.
