Minuscule tasks that earn more scholarship

I was wondering about several minor things that may or may not affect scholarship money. Foreign languages are a great example. Will taking 3 years instead of 2 foreign languages increase my chances of earning scholarship or even grant me more? I plan on going to the University of Texas and I’m the top 2.5% in my class. For those of you who don’t know Texas public schools are required to admit those in the top 8% of their class. That means I will be accepted indefinitely. So the real questions are will taking another foreign language credit increase my chances of earning more scholarship? Will doing 100 service hours increase chances of scholarship? I was also wondering about junior year (I’m only a sophomore, so I’m relatively new to anything about scholarship). Will taking 7 classes junior year instead of 5 or 6 increase chances of more scholarship? Basically I just need to know how to maximize scholarship. My mom is also a foreigner (she’s a native Hungarian) and people tell her that because she is a minority I will be given scholarship. I’m not so sure that’s true because I am still white (not a minority). Thanks for the help!

Hungarian is not a minority.

Schools like UT likely award their merit based on high stats…high test scores.

Nothing more to say. Merit awards are based on high test scores which bring the university’s standing up. There may be some individual art or music type scholarships as well but those tend to be one off. Check here for some specifics: [Texas Scholarships: Scholarship Types](http://www.texasscholarships.org/types/index.html)

Chic…

Don’t only apply to UT. Apply to some of the other Texas publics because they may give you merit scholarships for your stats. UT-Dallas, Texas Tech, and others give generous merit scholarships for stats.

Again, many/most schools care about TEST scores when it comes to awarding merit scholarships because those help with the school’s rankings. Things like taking extra FL classes mean very little to a school. Such things don’t “help” the school.

What are your test scores and GPA?

I have a 4.0 GPA and my SAT score is around 1800. I’m only a sophomore so I haven’t taken the ACT. My PSAT score as a freshmen was a sorry 159.

A 159 PSAT as a frosh is quite good. By the time you’re a junior, it could be much higher.

Once you have scores from your jr and sr years, we can better advise you to where you can get scholarships. The scholarships that exist right now may not even exist when you’re applying to college.
