Miscellaneous Expenses!!

I am an international applicant and want to know the personal expenses that are listed around at $2500 for a year. Is this usually a higher or lower number? Are freshman eligible for research work? What are the job opportunities on campus and can they make a considerable difference in the personal expenses?

A shameless bump!!!

it depends on how much you eat out/drink and how much you like to buy things. for me, 2500 seemed more than enough.

freshman are eligible for research. just go on any profs site and see what interests you. just ask and more likely than not, they’ll take you into their research group.

plenty of job opportunities from dining hall to tech support. theres virtual job board for uiuc (google it) which has listings for all jobs on campus. its not too hard.

Thanks chemesrule!!
I know about the virtual job board but as I have not accepted the admission I don’t have a NetId. Can you give a me vague idea about the wages a freshman can earn and how soon one can start? How much can one earn doing research and what is the max hours per week?

wages range anywhere from minimum wage to $12/hr. mostly they at ~$8/hr. they’re up year-round so when you start depends on the employer. during the semester, research is usually counted as credit hours towards your gpa. you get paid for research during the summer time when there are no classes. unfortunately i do not know the wages for summer research, as it depends on the funding of the professor.

the rule of thumb for research during the semester is 5 hours in the lab for 1 credit hour. most people do 2-3 credit hours which equates to 10-15 hours in the lab a week. during the summer, its as many hours as your want to put in.
