Miscellaneous Life Ramblings

Wow, @Calliemomofgirls! That’s a LOT! And the possibility of having 3 out 4 close(r) to home is a dream to envy. Congrats on your MFA, too.

I hope so, too. This is a great thread for BS epilogues, and I think it can be an encouragement to those just embarking to see how various BS journeys continue to wind.

I posted some pics on the wedding thread after they were married summer of '23. They met in Georgia while he was posted there. There are a few other pictures in that thread if you search for them. This one (different thread) is one of my favorites. He’s so grown up, so launched, so gone…

I have spent far too much time reading old posts on these boards in the past few years with two kids applying to BS, but it is fun to see some old familiar names popping up in this thread now! You all have provided invaluable insights into different schools and the whole process. I love reading the life updates. Cheers!

Oh, @Calliemomofgirls , it seems like yesterday you were starting this process. Excited for you to be gathering your flock back near the nest!

I’d thought my kid might be seeing grad school in his future, but he’s been very happy in the work world and seems to be making the most of his time, on and off the clock. He still gets together with his BS friends, and this of course makes me very happy. (I’m old enough to know how wonderful it is to have friends from forever ago!) It is so fun to spend time with your adult kids and to think, wow I really enjoy this person’s company!

Reading posts here reminds me of some of the stresses along the way, and it’s nice to have those in the rear view mirror. It is easy to say from this vantage point that it really does all work out.

I can’t believe that it be will ten years in June since our son graduated from Choate. Ten years! He still keeps in touch with several of his classmates. I wonder if they’ll have a reunion.

Ok, - - it just got real.

For a family emergency, I needed to leave the heaven of summer and fly to Maine. It’s really, really cold. I cannot believe my child wants to opt in to this.

Is February the worst of it? I just drove in serious ice (did a fine job which surprised me.)Please tell me that this thaws in March??

Next question is about docks. Because if the kids launch boats from the rivers edge in barefoot but no dock? Yikes.

I clearly have some new post M10 questions to ask!

And @ChoatieMom there are not enough cocktails in all New England to warm me up!!!

We have definitely had snow in April in MA and CT. I worked at a camp in Maine, and the lake was still cold enough in June that we did our lifeguard training in wetsuits!

My kid rowed at a Maine college, and I learned that there were many things that “only pussies do”. They were all things that seemed quite reasonable, maybe even non-negotiable, to me.

Hope the emergency has been worked out and is no longer an emergency!

Thank you. It is for now. But I have good reason to come back. So Maybe M10 means I have 2 reasons? Fingers crossed. For the kid. I will limit my visits to the warmer months!

That’s because you’re supposed to be drinking scotch.

New topic: bathrobes for boys.

Sitting here with a friend whose child is a city boarder (We do things backwards. The schools are in the city and the country kids board.)

I said I will need to buy my kid a bathrobe if he goes away. For the dash from the shower to his room. She laughed. Said no one under 65 would be caught dead in a robe.

Is this true? No bathrobes for boarders? Or is this a cultural difference?

For boys, some do. Most, iME, don’t. It’s personal preference. If they don’t wear one at home, they’re unlikely to use at BS

But a shower caddy is a must.

And shower shoes of some sort because  public shower floors.

I supposed guys can channel their inner highlander and get a bath skirt. LOL. Just watch out sitting down.

In my house, that’s a towel around the waist, which is is what most guys used in the dorms and lockerrooms.

And really, if they haven’t figured out peek-a-boo before heading off to BS, they may need remedial instruction beforehand.

Still have my USNA issue b-robe from 45 years ago. And my peacoat.

Has anyone ever put together a cocktail/mocktail list by school here?

It has almost been 2 years since DS23 graduated from Deerfield! It took a semester at a college she hated, then a semester at home working and reapplying to end up somewhere she loves perhaps as much as Deerfield. She landed at St. Olaf College (she was born in Minneapolis but we moved when she was 5. She’s majoring in math with most likely, a concentration in Engineering. St. Olaf has great merit for transfer students and after a semester she got an additional 7k dance scholarship (and is not even a dance major). She also just got a Student Instructor job for next fall in calculus and a Freshman orientation leader job. She’s also going back to Deerfield for the second summer in a row to be an RA at their summer experimentory. I credit Deerfield with bringing this introverted girl out of her shell and creating an exceptional leader.
My non-bs child S25 is in the throes of hurry up and wait mode for Service Academy Appointments. He has an appointment to USMMA, but USNA was always his dream. The more he learns though, the more he thinks he would probably choose USMMA and he will be happy I think not to have to make a choice. He is going for an overnight visit in a couple of weeks.
I cannot believe we will soon be empty nesters. It has not hit me yet. I am so proud of my kiddos.

We did one for colleges quite a while back:

Harvard Wallbanger
Fuzzy Naval Academy
Mint Julliard
Brandeis Alexander, etc.

It would be fun to try one for BS.

Anyone? Anyone?

I’ll start:

Middlesex on the Beach
Choatelate Martini (can’t spell Chocolate without “Choate”)
