in college i was involved in a bar fight and punched someone, once. i got charged with misdomeanor assault. that was around 8 years ago. Now, i have graduated law school and passed the bar exam in NJ. i had to be interviewed and go to a couple seminars(because of the charge) and am now waiting to hear if they will admit me. its been 4 to 5 months. so i’m just wondering if anyone knows if it should take this long, longer? the guy i dealt with for the interview and the seminars is not replying to the few emails i sent him. i had a job all lined up for tomorrow and they were actually trying to get a hold of the state about my status as well. after a week they did and they cannot hire me since i cannot do law until i’m admitted and they haven’t recieved my report yet.

also, be nice to hear anyone who had this same or similar charge and was admitted to NY or NJ

Assuming you disclosed this on your law school applications, the school clearly didn’t think it was something that would keep you from being admitted, or they wouldn’t have accepted you. It’s sort of unusual that your future employer won’t hire you until you’re admitted. You may not be able to “do” law, but you can work under the supervision of an admitted attorney. Most first-year associates/ADAs/etc. work for months before they’re admitted. There’s actually a third-year associate at my firm who has still not been admitted, though he passed the bar on his first try.

it does seem strange. and i told them this on the interview, that i didn’t feel comfortable starting before i was admitted and they made it seem like no big deal. i do know that i was replacing someone and taking over there work. i’m guessing in order to do that i’d need to be admitted or know that it be soon.
