Miserable at my Uni -- is this what college supposed to be about?

<p>I currently go to Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, FL (technically Estero FL, halfway between Naples & Fort Myers) in what is “South Florida”. </p>

<p>I absolutely hate it here.</p>

<p>It’s everything opposite that I would expect from a college, let alone a University… the people here are VERY closed-minded, judgemental, manipulative, matierlistic, fake, immature, rude, stuck-up, snobby, un-friendly, non-independent thinkers at all, and very, very, ignorant. </p>

<p>I absolutely do not feel comfortable here, or in South Florida in general as people here have VERY backwards logic and I feel like i’m being judged 100% of the time, constantly being stared at, whatnot, etc. </p>

<p>I’m a normal looking guy, I’m 18, I’m not skinny nor overweight, I’m extremely friendly and I love nice people and I have a sense and a gut-feeling about alot of people here, and it’s not good.</p>

<p>It seems like the only thing people care about here are things that I have no care for at all (and I’m way past this stage, as I’ve been in this stage in high school), and people care about drama, looking good (they will seriously go behind everyone’s back to make themselves look good which is crazy) and materialistic things, and being “cool”. But it’s magnified to a huge level where I just don’t feel comfortable here at all because I can’t leave my dorm room without people judging me and staring at me like I’ve killed someone because I’m very polite to basically any human.</p>

<p>It just seems that society down here is very *****ed up because even their families and parents are like that, where they are mostly all from (South Florida families where it’s all about looking good and at least pretending to have money… I know families that spend their entire money just leasing a BMW to look good and fit in with everyone else). </p>

<p>The sad thing is that these people believe that life is very shallow and screwed up and that people are like that everywhere and that they strive for that in their life!</p>

<p>Here in Fort Myers there’s not that many people here, and mostly are older aged-retired people, and it’s very spread out. It’s dead here almost 95% of the time and people still seem to find the act to be rude to someone even though there is barely any people here or traffic to care for.</p>

<p>Why are people so un-genuine, mean, and cunning here?</p>

<p>Why do people ignore everyone else here? Why isn’t anyone themselves? </p>

<p>And college is a place to explore, be open, be friendly and open to new things, not ignoring everyone who walks by you and such? Aren’t I supposed to feel comfortable here and be open to new things and not be so closed minded? Isn’t college supposed to be fun & inviting?</p>

<p>Why are people so mean here,
and HOW can I not let it affect me? How do you ignore people and how do you not make it so obvious?</p>

<p>The WORST part of this whole story is that I’ve been getting off of depression because of the society, and coming here has been one of the biggest struggles not trying to become any more depressed and understanding more things about myself and how to not be depressed and whatnot. </p>

<p>Please any advice is welcome. College shouldn’t be like this right, and I should transfer and move where a place is a lot better?</p>

<p>college isn’t like the movies (I watched Liberal Arts the other day, great movie but damn I wish college were like that) but it shouldn’t be as bad as you’re experiencing it to be.</p>

<p>You should definitely transfer. You sound miserable. Just know that you’re not the only one who is unhappy with their choice of college, and know you have the ability to get out and be somewhere you like.</p>

<p>As hard as it is, try to make sure your grades stay high. Depression is a real pain, I know. But at least visit your uni’s health center if it’s getting to be too much.</p>

<p>The quick answer: Transfer</p>

<p>In fact, maybe transferring to a small, elite liberal arts college would be good for you. Liberal arts colleges tend to attract the more intellectual nerdy types. As for not getting judged, lol, you’re going to get that ANYWHERE.</p>

<p>Yeah, you sound miserable there. In fact, you sound a lot like me! If I were you, I’d get out of there. I transferred for the same reasons. You sound like you’d do well on east or west coast university, so def check 'em out. Liberal arts colleges, for the most part, have great financial aid for transfers, so I’d look into some in CA, MA, NY, PA area.</p>
