Missed June 7 Subject Test Registration. Now What?

Son is finishing APUSH this year (sophomore). Needless to say, the school has been solely focused on preparing the class for the AP exam.

Now I’ve joined CC and see all the “chance me” threads comment on the subject test scores or their absence. Crud. Son is not registered for the June 7 subject tests.

Will he be OK with “just” an AP score? (Assuming its a 4 or 5)

Should he plan to take the History subject test at a later date with a prep course (to offset any summer brain shrinkage)?

Should I be dismayed that the school never mentioned that an SAT subject test may be in order at the end of APUSH?

Thanks, Kelley

See if the schools he wants to apply to require subject tests; if so, has he taken any already? The schools that want them usually require two. A LOT of good schools don’t require any, and some don’t require if you take ACT instead of SAT.

I haven’t seen any schools that take an AP in lieu of a subject test, but that might be just me.

Well, in a quick look at some of his schools (Colgate, Bucknell, Cornell, Vanderbilt, W&M, UVa) I saw the requirements are all over the map.

But, it seems to be a moot point, any way. I called CB and found out the only way for him to get in the June 7 test is as a stand by. (Show up at 7:30 am, with money and registration ready, and hope they have space.) And since that scenario is sure to embitter son, I think we’ll just wait.

CB told me that the 08-09 SAT test dates will be announced on May 29. I’ll just sign him up for the first test in September and have him study over the summer. Not ideal, but better than nothing.

Thanks.

Some schools always have testing space available; you could ask around to see which centers usually don’t fill up; if he already studied for the AP that might be way more easy than studying over the summer.

you can always do standby testing.
