Question-do colleges/coaches ever invite players for individual or team workout to evaluate in person-is this permitted for Div. 1 or Div 3? Background is son is a Sr. and this past spring & summer had gotten a fair amount of Div 2/3 interest including NESCAC, calls, invites to campus, etc. as well as a few personal texts and letters from FCS/1AA inviting him to their Div 1 Camps. He was probably a little under the radar for the FCS/1AA so camps would be important but he was injured this summer so he was not able to attend their camps. Also plays 3-sports at high level so that makes it a little difficult to go to camps/showcases. He has Not been tested/evaluated in person by higher Div. schools so was wondering if they are allowed to or if they bring players in to look at more closely.
Which sport? Football? If so, coaches are probably done with recruiting for the season. If playing sports is a key component of your son’s college admissions process, you may want to consider a PG year and attend camps this summer.
If the player is on campus for a workout, it would probably count as an Official Visit because on UV is very limited in what the student can do (even down to eating). A school has a limited number of OVs as does the athlete.
I wouldn’t wait for an invite, but would continue with the things a recruit can control - sending film, making contacts, goin to camps if there are any available.
Football, though he has had some interest from schools for another sport. A PG year would be an option but he is not sure he wants to PG, and I am not sure about the cost benefit. He has a lot of D3 and some D2 interest but primarily wants to play football if it got him into a top academic school( top NESCAC or Ivy) but that may require PG. The next step down academically are interested but son not so interested in those school.
The NCAA does not allow private workouts. A school may watch a prospect workout/lift with his high school team on one or two occasions during the spring contact period. And obviously colleges can come and watch the games live.
Also agree with @HPTD12 that this is pretty late in the cycle to try and generate D1 recruiting interest this year. While I don’t believe that recruiting is done yet, pretty much every school is going to be working from a board of established recruits they have been following/evaluating for a period of months. Probably a bridge too far to try and get on a board now with schools who have not been talking to him, sorry.
Thanks-agreed, bridge too far. This past summer he did have some Ivy/Patriot League and similar interest and contact (a few texts, calls, emails invites to camp) but I believe he was low end on list for that level and since he did not attend any camps difficult to standout and fell further or off the board. Plus Sr. Yr. was a good year (all-star etc.) but not great (due partly to new 1st time Off Coord who struggled a bit).
