Missing UChicago Students

I have a 3rd year who told me on the phone call today about Austin. When I searched the internet I realized there are 3 cases missing- 2 students. I think D did not want to freak me out but I am. My prayers are with the families.

My mistake- 3 youths, one UChicago student- all terrible.

This is disturbing.

From news reports it appears that the missing U Chicago student went to the shoreline to watch the storms. The waves were very unpredictable that evening.

I hate to say this, but human trafficking has become a huge business, especially in Chicago.

Condolences to his family and friends.

How unnerving. Was just in Chicago and caught the bus past Hyde Park. There is a lot of student housing there. My cousin’s son lives there and has just gotten a part time job. The city seemed quite safe while we were visiting, but you really can’t tell. :-(.

This student does not seem to be a victim of foul play. He walked to the lake last Wed. as a severe storm was rolling in and most likely was knocked into the water by the wind. He had a passion for meteorology and his family believes he may have headed to the lake to observe the storm.

This is the web site his family created.

The blog, especially now that the outcome is known is heartbreaking.

Very sad. A beautiful young life cut short.

I am devastated and ill. D lives one block from there. We met him at orientation- really nice guy. My heart goes out to his family.

Ugh. It makes me sick to hear this.

Austin went to the same small high school as D2 (450 students). Austin is the second grad from this school to die from an accidental drowning while away at college in the past 5 years. Nick Garza drowned at Middlebury in 2008.

The entire school has been devastated. D2 knew both Nick (well) and Austin (casually).

Are his parents assuming he went down to the lake to watch a storm or did he mention to someone that he was going down there to watch the storm? Why would someone go out for a walk without taking their cell phone or wallet?

If it was raining, he might have left the phone behind to keep it dry… I can also see how a teenager/younger adult might not take their wallet (D2 leaves home without it all the time, much to my dismay – leaving her driver’s license and AAA card behind).

Our D frequently goes places with no phone and no ID. My mom does too. Myself, my S and H generally carry our wallets and phones nearly all the time.

I had no idea it was common to leave the house/residence without a wallet/ID and cell phone. It’s been drilled into our two sons to always have ID/Wallet/Cell Phone when leaving their residence. It doesn’t seem very logical to me to be without ID or cell phone.

People are all different in their habits. To me it is not that unusual for an individual to choose to leave a residence sans phone and/or wallet, as it happens with several near and dear to me. I have to specifically remind D and mom if they need to bring one or both. Also have to remind H when I need him to bring his phone (he generally carries his wallet).

The walk was in the evening and not too far…
