Why are these universities seemingly more interested in preserving the status quo than the truth?

Missoula is just one school. When we get to see the book, we can judge whether Missoula’s many reported rapes reflect a higher than normal rape rate, or a typical rape rate at college.
My understanding is that Krakauer is a respected writer.
I think attitudes are changing. My son enrolled there a year after the incident. Part of the orientation was a skit on date rape. It was really well done.
D got her best scholarship offer from UM, but this issue was a bit of a deal killer.
I hope she let UM know, @Magnetron. Schools need to know that prospective students are taking these stories seriously… and want to see serious reactions on part of the administration.
@katliamom, she called and asked Admissions about it at the time. They had a pretty good answer about what was happening going forward, but also mentioned that she was not the only one balking at the prospect of a high rape likelihood campus. The local prosecutors having a worse track record than the school was beyond their control.
Her eventual official communication was much more generic; “Thank you for the generous offer, but …”
That’s probably a good way to respond - and clearly, Admissions knew they had a problem. It’s alarming to think of serious crime taking place on that lovely little campus. I have a soft spot for Missoula after visiting the town/school.
