MIT chances without ISEF

any chance or hope of MIT without ever making it to ISEF…my region has a problem where this girl keeps winning with a continuation on the same project year after year (Part I, II, and III…and so on) and so there is no hope for anyone else ever making it to ISEF

do I still stand a shot at MIT?

heres just a brief overview of my acadmic profile:

800 Math IIC
780 Chemistry
740 US History

4.0 GPA UW so far

1/500 rank so far (sophomore year)

taking a VERY rigorous schedule (planning on 15-16 AP classes by graduation)

Class President, County Student Government President, involved in clubs like Key Club (Community Service), DECA, NHS…

sorry for being so brief!!!

MIT admits 1500-1600 applicants each year. How many ISEF participants are there each year, and how many of them apply to MIT? Of course you have a chance, just like most of the students who apply. It looks as if you’re on track to be a competitive applicant.

dude…i don’t think THAT many ISEF finalists apply to MIT. There are 1500 ISEF finalists around the world…not all of them want to go to MIT. That being said…I was a finalist at the most recent ISEF (2006, my sophomore year) and i plan to to go two more times. Is that girl u were talking about in the same grade as you? Maybe you can wait till she graduates >.>

or just intern with a car salesman =)

btw how much does ISEF increase your chances?

no shes a class above me…so competing with her isnt a problem…her grades and scores would get her nowhere

but its the principle that ive accomplished nothing in research and science that makes me distinguished as an MIT candidate…and how much THAT will hurt my chances of acceptance

im applying for RSI, NHI next summer to improve this problem to a degree…

thanks for all the help u guys tho! thats a true statement…even tho many apply there are far more candidates like me who havent won ISEF every single year

just because you haven’t gone to ISEF doesn’t mean you haven’t accomplished anything in research and science. How long have you been entering science fairs? if you keep doing it, it shows perseverance i guess.
btw r u a rising junior?

Smder99, most applicants to MIT haven’t done research at all, let alone done very well in a research competition.

yeah coolphreak im in the same class as u

ive done sci fair since early on (elementary) every year until freshman year…
but this past year…i took AP Chemistry…which is mostly upperclassmen so the teacher never mentioned sci fair because it wasnt required so the thought never crossed my mind :frowning: until all my friends were pressed for time when it came down to the final weekend b4 the fair…and by that time it was too late for me

so i didnt do one this year…but im hoping to do one next year

hmmm atleast people in your school know that science fairs exist lol…i’m like the only one who knows about it at my school

none. zero. maybe next time.

I’m wondering if fairs like mentioned make a significant impact on an applicants chances? I placed second in a national championship titled “Young Scientists” here in Norway (phsyics extended essay) and also received support to attend the LIYSF (http://www.liysf.org.uk). Im curious how this may affect my chances?

What pebbles said. Every single MIT student has been an ISEF finalist.

Every. last. one.

You heard it here first.

There are about 1400 ISEF participants each year, but only 500 or so are seniors. Out of those 500, not everyone wants to go to MIT. In addition, not everyone at ISEF is the cream of the crop; I went to ISEF last year, and went this year, and not all the people at ISEF are the cream of the crop; some people get lucky and make it to ISEF because the region they are in isn’t competitive at all, and colleges know this; I saw a girl at ISEF who wore a lacey tube top dress to judging. I don’t mean to critique her fashion sense, but I don’t think that was appropriate for the event.
Don’t worry, you’re on the right track.

I heard of one guy who got in without ISEF because he was recruited for the underwater hockey team. anyway this kid got put on probation and eventually kicked out when he got an A- in 8.01… At least that’s what Mutt McGunn said in his blog

haha…too bad i dont play underwater hockey :-(
