Still nothing about the portfolio in the checklist…any change that anyone else has seen?
Admissions confirm this is normal.
Is there any chance MIT results for EA come out before dec 16th? Wondering if that has historically been the day for results…
I believe it’s always Saturday in mid-December.
I’d be very surprised if it’s any other day than Dec 16th this year.
This thread had been so quiet throughout the fall. Anticipation is definitely building in our household though as the decision date approaches. My kid seems pretty relaxed but i can see he isnt moving forward on regular decision apps at the moment. Really hoping that wont come back to bite him after the 16th!
Perhaps learn from DS2022’s experience:
- he applied EA to MIT, 1 expensive Reach (meaning he probably can’t attend unless they offered high scholarships), 1 Target and several safeties
- he didn’t want to write all those supp essays for RD Reaches until he heard from MIT
Well, he was deferred, like 66% of the applicants.
That meant that he had to apply to ~10 RD Reaches (if he didn’t want to attend his affordable state college), writing about 25 essays during Christmas break, which was the absolute worst experience.
Also, check what the colleges need because Princeton needed a graded paper and we had to scramble to find something/anything because we couldn’t get any teachers’ responses over Christmas break.
This Blog post is very informative. You might want to have your kid read it and prepare.
Sadly, he just decided not to apply to Princeton because of this. I know winter break will be painful …cant seem to get that through to him.
That post is really nice…i will share it. I dont think he is avoiding the remaining apps because he thinks he will get into MIT but rather he just isnt excited about the other schools and cant seem to motivate. He has about 6 other EA schools that will come back in January and then the California schools in March but of course MIT is the goal.
Good luck. This is such an emotional roller coaster.
We’re in the same holding pattern here. I just forwarded that deferral blog post to my son, but I’m not sure it will light a fire under his butt. Good luck to all of us!!
We’re giving my son an incentive to work on two sets of essays before 12/16. He started. MIT by far is where he wants to go. I know he’ll likely be deferred and then won’t be motivated so I’m pushing. I didn’t tell him about the 12/16 date. Figured let him find out closer. To prepare I wrote him a letter which he’s read and I’ll have him read it again. I’ll share that blog. This is an emotional roller coaster.
Definitely tough and I understand. My son has similar sentiments. Can you give him an incentive? Do the next two you like the best before the holidays and you get ….?
I recognize the challenge and lack of motivation that seniors often feel when approaching regular app essays, but it’s important to start preparing them sooner rather than later. Maybe consider sitting down with your son to brainstorm and outline the essays for the remaining colleges. He doesn’t need to write them immediately, but having a clear idea of how to adapt his MIT essay for other applications would be beneficial. Jotting down some basic frameworks now can significantly ease his workload and reduce stress later on. Wishing your son all the best with his MIT EA – I’m sure he’ll do wonderfully!
Thanks for the tips…will try to implement some of it! Goal is two apps done this weekend. After that unlikely anything gets done until the 16th. Good luck to all!
One way to keep busy… I wrote my son a letter that regardless of where he’ll get in he’ll do great. Their decision doesn’t change how great he is
My daughter just received a letter her know the decision was coming 12/16. I was hoping on not mentioning it to her, to keep her mind off it. Looks like she’s aware now. haha
It’s d-day. Good luck everyone who applied.
My neighbor’s daughter applied EA to MIT and she is like a sister to my son. They grew up together. My son got admitted to Harvard last year and we sooooo hope that she gets into MIT. We are so excited and nervous. Good luck everyone!
