My range of extracurricular activities is varied, and I’ve been told more than once that “they don’t show much focus” in terms of the fact that I balance both Empower the Children and, for example, Science Club, while still enjoying MUN. I can see what these people are trying to get at, but the fact of the matter is that I’m not yet sure what exactly I want to do, and I don’t want to restrict my opportunities for the sake of what appears to be a “strong focus.” All I know is that I want to pursue engineering in some form…
Is it really looked down upon if a prospective student has a variety of activities that they put decent time into, as opposed to having two or three that they fully dedicate themselves to?

I have leadership positions in the clubs that I do, and I really like them! I just would hate for my uncertainty regarding a future career to disadvantage me…

^ I think you’ll be fine. Admissions won’t be won over by laundrylisting (that is, joining a bunch of clubs and then doing nothing with them), but you do not, in fact, have to know what you’re going to do with the rest of your life right now :D

(Saying this as someone who was heavily involved in horseback riding, flying, karate, martial arts, drama, community service, etc… in high school.)

I have a question about the teacher evaluation forms: On the evaluation form, it says that teachers can write a letter without the form, but they should still fill out the first page of the form. But my counselor told me that this is not really necessary because in the past, they’ve sent teacher recs without filling out the evaluation form at all.
So do teachers have to fill out the first page of the form? Or can a rec be sent without it?
Thanks! :)

@charizarrd: I’m home-schooled and do not have any academic teachers; however, I had the people who wrote recommendations fill out the first page of both evaulation forms and attach them to their letters. I’d say you should probably have your teachers fill out the first page. That’s just my opinion.

The admissions website says that November is the last month to do standardized testing. Does this mean you can complete your testing requirements in November, or should you send all required scores before November 1st?

A rec can be sent without the first page – it’s not that a recommendation without the first page will be thrown away or anything – but your teachers should fill it in.

It means that you can take November tests for EA, no rush report required.

yeah, it’s just that one of my teachers isn’t at my school anymore, and it’s hard to get in touch with him so I’m not sure he’ll be able to fill it out and get it to me in time :

I am applying as a freshman for fall 2011. I have taken SAT subject tests(2400), SAT reasoning test(2190), TOEFL(657) and GCE O Level(7A). I am currently preparing for GCE A Level which I plan to take in Jan 2011 and May 2011. What should I do to improve my chance of admission and how should I indicate that I am preparing for GCE A Level?

you can’t upload them directly into the essay, no, but you can upload them to wherever and just link them. good feature request for the future - will pass it on.

I e-mailed MIT admission office to request a new EC for my EA interview (suggested by my original assigned EC). They were not able to find me and asked for my ID#. I submitted part 1 and paid application fee about a week ago. Could you please tell me where can I locate my #ID if everybody is assigned one? Thanks.

I’m applying to MIT Early Action and I took all my tests and stuff and I sent my scores to the school a few days ago (I should’ve done it earlier). However when I went again to read the MIT blogs, it says that it takes between 4-6 weeks for them to process it. This worries me because I already sent my scores, but if it takes around 6 weeks for them to process, then it would be past November 1st. At the same time, MIT said that they will take November scores for Early Action, it just that the people have to send it directly to the college.

Therefore, did I technically still sent my scores in time or not?

You’ll have to get back in touch with our office - try calling.

@shiny -

you sent your scores in on time. we will accept test scores including for november tests so you’re late comparative to others but still fine for us.

Are scores sent after the November SAT at a disadvantage (for EA)? I plan on sending all my scores to fulfill testing requirements for MIT in November. (Haven’t sent any scores yet)

^ Nope, sending the November scores are fine. MIT wouldn’t tell you that if it wasn’t. Remember that Nov 1st is a postmark date anyway. Admissions starts with complete applications and keeps going through newer ones as they come.
