First, is there such thing as a “final-term report”? I heard someone mention it on one of the MIT Admissions blogs, but I couldn’t find it anywhere else except for that one post.

Also, out of curiosity, how would the admissions officers react if I wrote a significant challenge essay about the challenge of thinking of a topic for the significant challenge essay? The resolution, of course, would be writing about the challenge of thinking of a topic.

Thanks!

(Note: I’m not ACTUALLY doing that. I doubt the admissions office would appreciate my odd sense of humor…)

Hello MITChris
I have a couple of questions
1.I studied abroad in my 9th and 10th grade years. Then i returned to the US and am now a senior. However in the application there is a part for former schools, but my former school is not coming up there. What should i do? Leave the former school part blank or…
2. How many letters of recommendation can we send and can we send other materials,
not a art portfolio, but materials that tell more about us?
3. Like i stated above, i was abroad for my first two years , which are generally important for establishing a high school career. Basically i started my HS career in 11th grade and have taken part in as many Extracurricular activities and done as much as i can to stand out, but i know that i have not done as much as other people. I have done the best that i could in 1 year, but how do i tell the admissions people that? I believe that my experiences abroad are worth more than any activity because they will stay with me forever. What do you think? Will this hurt or benefit me?
Thank You

1) Don’t know what “final term report” means.

2) we get that topic quite a bit. unfortunately, not as cute or clever as you might think…

@Red001:

1) contact admissions@mit.edu and ask for the records office. they should be able to help you out.

2) we require two teacher recs and a GC rec. there is no official limit but if you send forty i will reach out through the internet and choke you myself. in all seriousness, send as many as you think you need in order to fully illustrate who you are as a person, but no more than that. if your letters are redundant, saying the same things, then do yourself, your teachers, and us a favor and don’t send them.

3) you can mention that in your essays and we will not hold it against you.

Hi MITChris!
I’m really really sorry if this has been asked already, but I’ve skimmed through a few pages of this thread and couldn’t find it so:

Do we have to send in our quarter one grades for EA? And if it’s not required… is it better to send them anyway?

^ Not required. You can send them in if you’d like/you think it’ll show something beneficial to your app (like an upward trend). Otherwise, probably not of critical importance.

What if we don’t get our first quarter grades until after we send in transcripts? Could we send in another one with our first quarter grades showing that we had an upward trend? (My first quarter ends November 12th)

I have a question about how GPA is done. I have an ISP (Independent Study Program) with my chem teacher and I’m doing some research using a gas chromatographer. However the class is actually hurting my GPA, even though he’s giving me a 99 for it. Should I ask the school not to give me any credit for the class and just let me continue it anyway, or should I just leave it as is and let MIT recalculate/understand that it brought down my GPA?

Hahaha. It’s because at our school, there’s advanced, then honors, then standard. An honors 99 is equal to a 91 in advanced. This term I’m actually doing really well in all advanced so it’ll actually bring me down.

On the MIT application, it only specified that we sent SAT and subject test scores to the school. Do we also have to send AP scores? Would not sending AP scores hurt our chances or would just self reporting it be enough? In addition, I think my counselor is sending my transcript with my AP scores on there, so would that copy suffice or do admissions want the actual official score reports be sent?

When you preview part 2 of the application, the Optional response doesn’t seem to have the ‘same’ formatting as the text in sections 1 and 3. It seems to supress blank lines (sometimes) and the right margin is about 4 inches.

Is there anything in the ‘works’ to remedy this?

I want to submit some supplemental materials but on my tracking page, it doesn’t have an area indicating whether or not they processed supplementary materials. Is there any way I can be informed of when MIT has received my supplemental material?
