MIT for connections

MIT seems to provide a very strong technical education. I was wondering if it is also a strong place for connections (business, the outer world, other universities… etc). should business-sides of engineering such as entrepreneurs consider MIT? and does MIT offer connections to far away technology centers such as New York and Silicon Valley? If yes, how?

Yes, of course, through the alumni network and also through professors (so-and-so trained under so-and-so, who’s the head of the department at X university).

If you’re interested in business, remember that MIT has not only outstanding technical departments, but also the Sloan School of Management, which is one of the best business departments as well. A large number of startups are founded by people who went to MIT.

Specifically, is MIT a good palce to make connections only to companies in Boston/founded by MIT alumni, or does it have ties to international firms and large existing companies in New York, Chicago, California, Penn etc etc? Do representatives of such companies come to MIT for talks and introductions? Do many MIT alumni work there? Does MIT provide resources to reach these firms? I need elaboration on this topic… specifically about companies not founded by MIT alumni or not located in Boston.

Of course – I have many friends working at big companies in NYC and SF (in engineering, finance, and other areas) that were not founded by MIT alums. They have lots of MIT co-workers, too. The alumni network doesn’t just extend to companies founded by MIT alums, it also includes companies where many MIT alums work.

MIT’s reach certainly extends far beyond Boston. Actually, very few of my friends are still in Boston – most took jobs in SF, LA, DC, or New York. There are huge numbers of MIT alums in Silicon Valley, of course. And companies from all over the country come to MIT to recruit interns and employees, both at the annual Career Fair and at other times.

You can look at the [Graduating Student Survey](http://web.mit.edu/career/www/infostats/graduation.html) to see a sampling of common places MIT alums start working after graduation, if they don’t go directly to grad school.

Thx
MIT sounds gr8 for engineers from all aspects ;)
