MIT has lost a bright future student

Hu, who at the end of his junior year had earned a cumulative grade point average of 4.61 by taking 10 Advance Placement courses in his sophomore and junior years, was in line to be the Class of 2012’s valedictorian or salutatorian, Robinson said, adding Hu had recently learned he was accepted into MIT.

At RB High, Hu was a peer counselor, Academic League captain, Science Olympiad president and in quiz bowl. He qualified for the U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad, was a U.S. Physics Olympiad semifinalist and in the U.S. Junior Mathematical Olympiad.</p>

<p>As a sophomore, Hu earned the top score in the California-Nevada-Hawaii region 2010 PhysicsBowl. According to a San Diego Math Circle press release, the honor was “made all the more remarkable because Hu found himself without a calculator at the competition and had to complete all the required calculations by hand.”</p>

<p>In October 2010, The College Board announced Hu was one of five Poway Unified students to earn a perfect score — 2400 — on the Scholastic Aptitude Test, an achievement received by less than 1 percent of all students nationally who take the SAT.
Last September, Hu was among 14 RB High seniors named as 2012 National Merit Scholarship semifinalists due to their performance on the PSAT taken in their junior year.

this is incredibly sad. i found out from someone in this group privately yesterday. i told stu immediately; i believe we will be sending something from our office to the family. </p>

<p>when i was a senior a sophomore - the singer in my brother’s band - died in a car wreck. it was hard then. it will be hard now, for david’s family and for his friends, including those among us in this group. </p>

<p>i wish i knew what to say other than that i love all of you and to those of you who did know david i am sorry and send my best. and also that when i heard this i know i sat back, reflected for a moment how lucky i was to have good health, and called my mom and told her i loved her. often the only good thing about tragedies are the lessons we can draw from them.

<p>David Hu will always be remembered for the funny, charming, bright, and amazing person he was. He had a way of speaking his mind, letting out unfiltered comments, that were nearly always spot on and hilarious. He would literally say exactly what was going on in his head without first checking to see if it was socially appropriate. But, it nearly always was a witty and insightful comment!! One of the absolute finest young people I have ever had the priveledge to know. David, we miss you… And those who hadn’t yet met you, they missed out on an amazing opportunity. I know MIT was your goal, and I am glad you were accepted, though you never got to follow through on that!</p>

<p>My son knew David. They did ARML and some other competitions together. He said he was a really nice young man. My son said they enjoyed playing ultimate frisbee, Mafia, and other fun games to let off steam at competitions. We are very, very saddened and everyone at the math circle will miss him greatly.</p>

<p>My DD competed in Quiz Bowl last week at UCSD. The organization created the David Hu Memorial Award to be given to the student with the highest total in Quiz Bowl. Very appropriate to have that award for him since he was very active in Quiz Bowl. RIP David Hu.</p>
