MIT Makes It Personal: One way you can take Society & the Environment to Work

STUDENTS ARE TAKING THE MIT PLEDGE OF SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

“I pledge to explore and take into account the social and environmental consequences of any job I consider and will try to improve these aspects of any organization for which I work.”

Awareness of actions and bigger-picture consequences goes beyond course education and student groups. To truly make a positive impact on the world, individuals have to make social and environmental responsibility a commitment; a lifestyle. One way to actualize this commitment is through the taking of a pledge at graduation. MIT’s Pledge of Social and Environmental responsibility is based on the text of the Graduation Pledge Alliance and serves as a way to focus campus discussions of energy, environment, and sustainability. The Pledge effort at MIT grew out of the MIT Generator and consists of events exploring what social and environmental responsibility is, opportunities for students to meet and interact with like-minded individuals, and a ceremony where graduating Pledge-taking students receive a green ribbon to wear during Commencement as a symbol of their commitment. Graduate students and undergraduates are equally welcome to take the Pledge.
