Can anyone shed light on MIT’s recruiting timeline for women’s soccer and lacrosse? When did the coach actually verbally commit to giving you his or her support?
I don’t know MIT specifically, but I would guess it is no different than the typical D3 timeline. Which is to say offers given starting Spring of Junior year, and continuing through the summer. Some d3s go into the fall of senior year, some don’t.
This is a great question to ask the coach, btw.
Does MIT give a boost to recruited athletes supported by a coach ?
S was recruited by MIT for another sport, baseball. They followed the same timing as other academic D3’s. Offer of support occurred during visit Fall of senior (same as NESCAC and other similar selective LACs). While the timing might be different for these 2 sports, I would guess they follow other academic D3’s because they are competing for the same pool.
His grades, rigor (plenty of AP math and sciences) and test scores were within MIT standards, but he did not have STEM awards or activities other than the school’s math team. The head coach told him with his support, S was about at 50/50 (I would guess his chances would have been much lower without the support). He had the same feedback from Caltech from the AD there. For other academic D3’s, he was told over 95%.
They do. It’s just not the slam dunk it is with other schools. It’s more like 50/50 but that is probably more (or less) depending on who desirable the athlete is. The snag is that there is little to none academic wiggle room. Coaches have gone on record that they won’t even pick up the phone with someone who has not hit a 770M 720ERW. In our case (1540/800M) the coach took issue with no MV Calc (due to school’s track, not lack of rigor) and advised us to move on as they thought he was unlikely to make it past admissions. As an MIT athlete he was good not great. Had offers from several equal to more competitive teams. And was accepted to several other top schools.
Very helpful-thank you.
Just wondering if anyone has frequent contact with MIT coaches right now. For me, the coaches seem hot then cold, then hot. Maybe they are just really waiting for 11th year grades and AP Scores?
Very possible. We didn’t truly engage until we had hard numbers. They don’t want to waste too much energy on kids that won’t pass the academic bar.
