MIT sues Frank Gehry

snicker snicker

There was a reason we all made fun of that building.

It’s too bad the building is having so many problems. We lived in MA while it was being built, and it was fun watching it go up. It’s a neat building. I like seeing something different once in a while. Now we live in Seattle - near another cool Gehry building (but one that is also not universally loved, I believe).

i for one think the stata center is beautiful

too bad people have to live and work in it

Aww…I love that building.

You can love the aesthetics or not, depending on your own taste, but it’s a hideous building from a functional perspective (the point I think iostream was making). You can’t find the second floor, there are conference rooms where all the diagonals cause meeting-goers to become physically ill, snow and ice fall from the heights of projecting roofs where they’ve collected onto passers-by, the alarms go off constantly, the place is full of leaks after only a few years, research groups are physically isolated from each other, the amphitheater can’t be used for actual presentations because Gehry refused to put in the necessary stuff to support audiovisual stuff - I guess he thinks the point of an amphitheater is to be looked at - the list goes on.

jessie – are you sure it was Gehry and not MIT that made the decision about AV stuff? just curious – I don’t have very good information to the contrary.

I was told that it was Gehry - it was one of the things that people brought up while making fun of the building in the last year before it opened (my freshman year). I don’t have, say, a document to back it up.

okay. the nytimes article had a quote from gehry accusing mit of cutting a lot of stuff last minute to cut costs… and one might think av stuff would be part of it. but that’s just a guess.

its a harvard consipracy i tell ya…wiki gehry he went to harvard graduate school
