MIT vs Penn LSM

Would like some insights into MIT (incl. dual degree with Sloan) vs Penn LSM (dual degree with Wharton) for biomedical research and management as well as premed.

Have you been accepted to both?

Yes

Although I have no personal knowledge of the program, I have heard compelling stories about the incredible networking opportinites that materialize for students in the competitive Wharton programs like LSM and M&T. Of course MIT is nothing to sneeze at. But if you like LSM that opportunity sounds pretty hard to beat! Congratulations!

Thank you. This one is hard to compare given MIT’s brand in STEM and Wharton’s in business. Also, I dont have info on how these would play out into med school admissions.

These are both excellent colleges. You can take the required courses for medical school admissions at either one.

But these sound like very time consuming programs…will you actually have room in your schedule and time to take the required courses for medical school admissions…in addition to the other work required?

It appears possible from sample schedules given on Penn’s website, though gap years are an option for the added benefit of switching career plans to biotech management.

Two fabulous options. Congrats!

Can you go to the accepted student days for both?

Planning to go, though the dates are partially clashing.

Amazing options. Congratulations.

Just to clarify, there is no such thing as a “dual degree” from MIT. You can double major, with one of your majors being from Sloan (Course 15, either 15-1 Management, 15-2 Business Analytics, or 15-3 Finance), but you get one degree. Doing a double major plus pre-med requirements would be quite a challenge, and med school admissions are somewhat GPA-sensitive.

Vagelos LSM is a true dual-degree program for a small cohort of about 25 students. Very intense and demanding, but very customizable, with options ranging across the business/life science spectrum. LSM with pre-med also extra-challenging, but definitely doable.

I helped a student through CC years ago who got into LSM and chose it, knowing med school was likely in his future. He turned down Brown PLME. He’s now in the Penn MD-PhD program. I don’t think he regretted his choice.

Both amazing options. The top science-tech school in the world vs. a super-selective program including the best undergraduate business education in the country. You will be pushed and have to work incredibly hard at either.
