MITES 2009 Information and Discussion

abiir-thats awesome! I want to go into Public Health too! I specifically want to major in bioengineering, or genetics…something along those lines.
Darmenta-that sucks, I definitely know the feeling

Melody224 - Nope. Medical school for me. :)

So Biology/Biochem/BME… for undergrad.

One guy in Nebraska just got his letter. Hope I’ll get mine tomorrow. (dang! What take them so long? It’s just 7 hours driving from here to Nebraska)

:)

med school for me too ansar!!! :slight_smile:
that genomics course in MITES would be pretty sweet.
oh wow, this is making me even more nervous…

@Melody224
That’s awesome! I rarely find people who are interested in the field I am intrested in. Do you know what career you’re going into? My sis is doing mechanical engineering and wants to go into sports medicine, apparently engineering is the most common major for people entering med school. Are you attending MITES?

Abiir,
I know I want to be a doctor. But I’m still not exactly sure which field of medicine I want to go into. So far it’s between pediatrics, epidemiology, and cardiology…
Yeah, actually that’s someone was telling me. Usually its the engineering/math types of people who get into med school at the highest percentages. Even more than Bio majors…
I don’t know if I got into MITES. I’m in Cali, so I’ll know soon. I’m hoping for the best!

I just checked my mail and still nothing :confused: I’m in Texas too, so it seems like I should have heard something by now. Oh well, guess I’ll check again tomorrow…

wow. you guys get your mail late in the afternoon. the postal guys in mississippi deliver it like, before noon.
well, today, i actually picked up the letter that MITES sent. and it’s official. i have been accepted.
but on another note: what did you all write your essays on? just curious…

@saddlerb
I wrote one of my essays on learning a new language (I’m currently attending Korean school :slight_smile: ), another on being a smart colored muslim girl wearing a headscarf and how that goes against people’s common conceptions of muslim women, the third on my dream career (epidemiology!!!), and the last on my mother’s battle with cancer.
What did you write about?

@Melody224
I hope you get in!! It’d be fun to meet all of the people on CC! Although I’m still not sure if I’m going… it’s really torturing me!!! :(

that’s really cool! i wrote my first essay on how i would love to work in the biochemistry field. or the nanotechnology field. my second essay was on my volunteer work with Keep A Child Alive (everyone should check it out! it’s a great organization). my third essay was about how people seem to judge me when they first see that i’m an african-american/native-american girl from mississippi. but they soon come to realize that i’m a respectable, well-educated girl. and my last essay was on my struggle with my own sexuality. and how i’ve come to accept myself for who i am.

@abiir: I would definitely do the MITES program. I don’t want to take anything from WTP, but MITES just sounds so much cooler and people in past years have had very high MIT acceptance rates, in some years up to about 80%, which I don’t think WTP can boast about.

@ abriir
o that’s so cool your learning Korean. I’m learning Japanese at my community college, I wish I could actually find an actually school, anyways yeah it would be cool to meet people on CC.

Mikester0904
I was thinking that too! However, WTP tends to spoil you a bit more :slight_smile: which would make my summer a whole lot of fun! I got everything (including transportation) paid for me, plus they have a whole lot more off campus activities than MITES does. I guess WTP is more laid back and hands on whilst MITES is more like structured class work. I think its going to come down to a coin toss… I’ve noticed I’m extremely bad at making tough decisions!!

@Blackrose21
cool! We have japanese at my school (its a huge school) but only asians take it…:slight_smile: I absolutely love japanese dramas although korean ones beat them hands down ^^! I’m learning Korean at my friend’s church which is a bit strange since I’m muslim. I go every saturday morning and learn korean with five year olds… it gets kind of loud!

Yeah, well I think that may be the reason that MITES gets higher acceptance rates, that adcoms kind of realize that you’ve already been exposed to MIT-level work and can handle it. Both great programs though, whichever you think will serve you better should be the one you choose. If you need some time to chill before senior year, do WTP. If you went the perks that come with being a MITES alumni, then do that.

Thanks abiir!!
And I agree w/mikester for the most part. Since money isn’t an issue in your case, you should do whichever one sounds most interesting to you. But keep in mind that MITES is longer, more classes, and more of a full college experience. Congrats on getting into both, though! I’m sure you’ll have fun at which program you decide to attend.

I’m now pretty sure that I’m attending MITES. I pretty much harassed my sister all day until she told me to shut up and go to MITES… :slight_smile: I hope I get to see all of you there!!!

@abiir, good choice :wink:

so hopefully i’ll get my rejection/acceptance letter tomorrow. If not I may go crazy…

Ah, lucky. My school only offers Chinese (no Japanese or Korean… -_-').

Essay 1: Wanting to go into medicine. How the Genomics course could help me get started in the field of medicine. Seeing poor people in Colombia when I was growing up.
Essay 2: Peer Tutoring and how I love helping people to learn. Related how I want to give back help as I needed help with English when I moved to the US.
Essay 3: Lack of hispanics in advanced courses and if I attend MITES, I could be sort of a role model.
Essay 4: Moving to Miami from Naples, FL and how I’ve grown closer to my Hispanic roots after being isolated in a small, white town for 6 years and coming close to losing ties with what makes me a Hispanic. :S

My stats are very bad, though, so I’m skeptical that I’ll get in. : /
Hopefully the mail will bring good news tomorrow!

^those sound like great essays! in fact, all of your guys’ (abriir,saddler, etc) essays sound great! I personally really liked my essays, I just hope the MITES people do.
At my school, we only have Japanese, and that class is pretty much a joke. I personally love learning languages. I’m trilingual…as of now ;)

hi hi! I GOT ACCEPTED!! I’m from AZ btw i got my letter yesterday. i was quite shocked… since i’m azn and mit and the math/sci/engineering fields don’t exactly need any more azns >>… i hope to see you all there though! :DD
